How can you tell if it is time to replace the alternator? What are the symptoms for a loose alternator belt What are the symptoms for V-Belt Failure ?….?
The alternator belt (also known as the Vbelt) powers both the alternator and the other parts of the engine compartment. You can have a lot of problems if you let your guard down. These are the 6 most obvious signs of a defective alternator belt:
1-A Battery Warning Lamp turns On
The alternator (alternator), can’t rotate at its optimal speed when the alternator belt is pulled loosely. This will cause the charging voltage drop and will result in the vehicle’s instrument panel displaying a warning lamp.
2- Engine Makes a loud squeaking noise when it is cold
Many vintage cars make a wheezing sound when they start when it’s cold. As the engine warms up, this sound disappears gradually. This is due to the loose alternator belt which is more slippery when cold and wet.
You should replace your alternator belt if you hear a clicking sound when you start the car. The engine may squeak even after it warms up if the belt is too loose.
3- Power Steering Hardening
As I have mentioned, the alternator belt powers several components like the alternator and the power steering pump. Some car models use a separate belt to power the alternator or power steering pump. However, most models use the same belt.
If the belt is damaged, the pump will stop working and the steering will become rigid.
4- Flashing and dimming light
The alternator charges the vehicle’s battery with 14.5 volts. It is approximately 12-12.5V when the battery is not in use. If the belt becomes loose or slippy, voltage spikes will occur.
This can be easily seen on the instrument cluster, where you will see the headlights and electronic lights. It is possible that you will notice a dimming or increasing brightness, or even a pulse-like sensation in some cases.
5- Sudden Stop
You could end up with an even worse situation if your alternator belt is worn. An alternator belt that is loose can cause electronic components to draw more power than it can produce. The vehicle may stop suddenly, leaving you stranded on roads. You cannot start the vehicle again if it is completely dead.
6- Battery Dead
The alternator belt may be slightly loose and the battery will not fully charge. This condition is most often detected when the vehicle starts. The loose alternator belt could cause the starter to wear out. If you don’t intervene quickly and the situation gets worse, your battery could be dead and you might not be able start the vehicle again the next time.
Should I tighten or replace the belt?
It is important to examine the alternator belt before you replace it or tighten it. It’s time to replace your alternator belt if it cracks or appears too dry.
Compare the new belt to ensure it is the same length. There are many vehicle types, including power steering and air conditioning. It can have different lengths depending on its function.
You must ensure that the alternator belt is properly installed. This will reduce belt life and could cause damage to the bearings of components like the alternator and power steering pump.
The majority of new vehicles are equipped with an automated belt tensioner. Although it is rare to loosen the belt, it may happen in certain cases. This is when the belt must be adjusted and the tensioner must also be changed.
