Sometimes it can be irritating to see the service lamp on the instrument panel go red after your vehicle has been serviced.

Sometimes, the mechanics that you visit do not have a diagnostic tool or are not familiar with how to reset the lamp. They might ask for outrageous amounts, such as 50-100 TL.

Today, I’ll show you how to reset your BMW E36 service light. (Do not confuse the service lamp with the engine fault lamps!) You don’t need any special equipment to do the operation. The problem can be fixed in a matter of minutes.

Open the hood and locate the OBD connection. You will find it on your right as you reach the damper tower and the hood. The cover has about 20 holes around the Pac-Man-shaped hole. Some of these holes might be covered on lower models. Pac-Man, keep your mouth shut. It’s holes 7 through 19 that are of interest to us.

Use a wire or paperclip. You can bend the ends of the paperclip using pliers, even if you don’t do anything. The ignition key should be in the second position. To begin, place one end the paperclip into hole 7, (pin), then insert the second end into hole 19. Allow to dry for about 4-5 seconds before removing. You will notice that the service lamp is reset when you examine the instrument panel.

Note: The inspection intervals will be reset if you leave the paper clips in the holes for longer than 10 seconds.
