What does the Camshaft Position Sensor do? How to replace the Camshaft Position Sensor ?….

Many people confuse the Camshaft Position Sensor (or Crankshaft Position Sensor) with each other. Both sensors have different fault symptoms and functions.

What is the Camshaft Position Sensor?

Camshaft Position Sensors are standard equipment in modern vehicles. The Camshaft Position Sensor is essential for vehicle operation. Calculates the rotational speed and position of the camshaft during that rotation.

It is possible that the sensor will not be detected when you open your vehicle’s hood. Every automaker has a different spot to place the sensor. It is typically mounted behind the cylinderhead, close to the engine block or near the lifters.

Camshaft Position Sensor measures the camshaft’s position relative to its crankshaft counterpart. This information is sent to ECU to adjust fuel injectors, ignition system timing.

Camshaft Position Sensor Malfunction Symptoms

1- Engine Malfunction Lamp Warning

The check engine light first lights up when the Camshaft Position Sensor is failing or has problems. The check engine light may not always indicate that the sensor has failed.

To diagnose the problem, you will need to test your vehicle with an OBD2 reader. Sensor failure generates error code P0340.

Your engine may be damaged if you ignore or delay checking or scanning it when the check engine warning light turns on.

2- Ignition Problems

The signals to the engine computer can also become weaker if the Camshaft Position Sensor is damaged or fails. The signal may eventually become so weak that it won’t allow the vehicle start. The starter will not turn if you turn it.

3- Concussion inside the Vehicle

Camshaft Position Sensor failures can cause your engine to lose power. Your vehicle will jerk or move randomly forward when this happens. These are both caused by the ECU not receiving correct information from the Camshaft Position Sensor, and injecting the wrong amount of fuel into cylinders.

4-Engine Stopping

If your vehicle doesn’t start, it is more likely that the engine will stall while you drive. The ECU does not send a “send gasoline to the cylinders command” to the fuel injectors. We don’t need to stress how dangerous this situation can be.

5- Sudden Acceleration Problems

You may experience sudden acceleration problems and jolts if the Camshaft Position Sensor is damaged. 50 km/h. If you can’t get up to speed, it’s a lucky thing. The injectors are sending the wrong fuel, which causes poor acceleration.

6- Other Problems

This sensor can cause transmission locking problems in some vehicle models. This problem can be fixed by turning off the engine, waiting a while, and then restarting the vehicle. It is temporary and the problem may reappear. The defective sensor should be replaced immediately.

Your vehicle will not automatically switch to Flexible Mode driving mode. This allows you to change gears but not exceed a speed limit.

7- Fuel runs out quickly

We stated that a defective Camshaft Position Sensor would cut fuel delivery to the injectors. The reverse is true. An incorrect reading could result in more fuel being sent into the cylinders.

Replacing the Camshaft Position Sensor

The Camshaft Position sensor can be replaced in about 5-10 minutes. You can replace the sensor yourself if you have the necessary experience and equipment.

1. Disconnect the negative cable.

2- Locate the sensor. The sensor is located at the engine’s top, front, or rear. The sensor will have a 2-wire socket attached to it.

3- To disconnect wires from sensor, press the tab on socket.

4- Unbolt the mounting bolt connecting the sensor to the motor. It is typically an 8mm or 10mm bolt.

5- Pull the sensor and turn it slightly to remove.

6- Apply engine oil to the sensor’s o ring.

7. Install the Camshaft Position Sensor, and tighten the bolt.

8- Connect the cable connector with the sensor.

9- Connect the negative battery terminal.

If your car is experiencing any of the problems listed above, take it to a mechanic. Inform the mechanic that you believe there is a problem with the Camshaft Position Sensor. This will help speed up the repair process.
