What is the P3497 Fault code? What does it signify?
A code P3497 means that the powertrain controller module (PCM), has detected an anomaly in the cylinder activation system on bank 2. “Bank 2”, in the code description, refers to the engine bank without the engine’s #1 piston.
Variable displacement engines (also known as cylinder deactivation systems) are engineered to reduce fuel consumption. It is usually used with engines that have six or more cylinders. Some driving conditions, such low speed or highway driving, may not require all the horsepower. In these situations, certain cylinders may be deactivated to reduce fuel consumption. Variable valve timing solenoids can be used to close the exhaust and intake valves of disabled-cylinders. The fuel flow to disabled cylinders is also cut off. The cylinder deactivation mechanism does not cause any loss of power or torque.
