What is the P0012 error code? What’s the reason for the Camshaft Position A fault (Bank 1)? How can I fix the P0012 fault code What are the symptoms and causes of the P0012 error code?

What is the P0012 fault code? What does it signify?

Fault code P0012 refers to a general drivetrain code. Toyota, VW, Honda, Chevrolet, Hyundai, Audi, Acura, etc. OBD II equipped vehicles with variable valve Timing (VVT), including thanks to Variable Valve Timing. This allows camshaft timing to be dynamically changed while the engine is running. This strategy can be used to increase fuel economy, power, and reduce exhaust emissions.

This technology has several components. The timing of the camshaft (camshaft) is what fault code P0012 refers to. The check engine light will turn on if the timing of the camshaft is not correct. A code will also be generated.

If the ECM / PCM/ ECU detects a difference between the camshaft angle desired and actual, fault code P0012 will be triggered. The ECM adjusts it if the camshaft is in a delayed position or the timing of the camshaft in Bank 1 exceeds the maximum delay value.

The code P0012’s “A” indicates the intake camshaft for an overhead camshaft engine with straight or inline systems. If the vehicle has a V engine, the code will indicate the intake camshaft at the 1st row (Bank 1)

What is the P0012 Fault Code and Why Does It Happen?

  • – Defective camshaft variable timing solenoid
  • Defective variable valve timing actuator
  • Low engine oil
  • – Use the wrong engine oil
  • – Wearned or extended timing chain
  • – A defective timing chain guide, or tensioner
  • – Engine oil contamination clogging the VVT solenoid

The camshaft phaser controls oil pressure and oil to control the timing advance or retard function. To ensure that the camshaft timing control works as intended, oil must have the proper viscosity. Too thick oil can lead to system malfunctions and operational problems. Other codes may also be caused by using the wrong oil.

What are the symptoms of the P0012 Fault code?

  • – Illumination for check engine lights
  • – Delay in timing causes difficult engine start
  • Fuel consumption will increase if the camshaft does not have the right gear to produce the highest fuel consumption.
  • Engine can stall or stall depending upon camshaft position
  • – Clicking sound emanating from engine
  • – An increase in exhaust gas emissions

Note: Your symptoms will vary depending upon the timing of your camshaft.

How to Fix the P0012 Fault Code

  • – Perform a road test and reset fault codes.
  • – Change the oil and filter with an oil viscosity that is compatible with engine specifications.
  • – Replace or repair the cable or the connection to the camshaft oil control solenoid.
  • – Replacing Bank 1 intake camshaft oil valve.
  • – Inspecting and fixing the timing chain alignment.

What is the importance of the P0012 Fault Code

An engine can run erratically or misfire, stall, run very hard or stop altogether. There may be excessive fuel consumption, carbon contamination and engine component failures depending on the location of the camshaft fault. This type of extended use can cause problems with the engine or valve system.
