What is the P0016 fault number? What is the description for the Crankshaft-Camshaft Position Correlation error (Bank 1 Sensor B)? How can you fix P0016 fault codes? What are the causes and symptoms of the P0016 error code?

What is the P0016 Fault code? What does it stand for?

The P0016 code refers to your camshaft or crankshaft. These are important components in your vehicle’s engine. The engine must run smoothly if these two components are not in perfect sync. If they are not in harmony, the motor can fail and code P0016 could be triggered.

The engine control module (PCM/ECM/ECU) will generate code P0116 if it detects that signals from the crankshaft position sensors and camshaft position sensor are not compatible. Bank 1 refers to the side that is occupied by cylinder 1 of an engine. “Sensor A” indicates the intake camshaft located on the inlet side of the cylinder head.

Engine control modules regulate the timing of various engine components. The ECM makes use of a variety sensors to determine when adjustments should be made and keep all systems in sync.

The ECM receives information from the crankshaft sensor about the crankshaft’s position. This information is used to determine when the engine fires up the spark plugs in order to maintain constant power and speed. Similar information is provided by the camshaft sensor regarding camshaft position.

If any of these sensors is operating outside normal parameters, the ECM will give error code P0016. It will also be triggered if crankshaft and camshaft positions are not compatible.

Both sensors function by passing a relay ring over a magnet sensor. The voltage generated indicates the position of the shaft. A timing belt or chain connects the shafts to one another. These components may be damaged and P0016 can trigger.

What are the Possible Reasons for the P0016 Fault code?

  • – A damaged or defective timing chain or timing belt
  • – Crankshaft reluctor or camshaft defect
  • – Defective crank sensor
  • – Defective camshaft sensor
  • – Connect loose cables or other connections
  • – Damaged guides or belt tensioners/chains
  • – Defective variable valve timing (VVT) actuator
  • – Defective variable timing solenoid (oil control va)
  • – Defective ECU
  • Low engine oil
  • – Incorrect engine oil viscosity
  • – Blockage of engine oil lines

What are the symptoms for P0016 Fault Code

  • – Illumination for check engine light
  • – The engine may not start, but the starter may be able to get it started
  • – The engine is not working properly
  • – A decrease in engine power and the inability to handle sudden accelerations.
  • – Engine makes clicking noises
  • – Increased fuel consumption

How to Fix the P0016 Fault Code

  • – Resetting engine fault codes, and verifying that the problem persists
  • Repair or replacement of damaged, frayed, or broken cables and connectors
  • – Replacing the damaged relay wheel
  • – Checking engine oil and changing it
  • – Replacing position sensor on the defective camshaft
  • – Replace or repair the wiring for the OCV or camshaft sensor.
  • – Replacing the damaged engine control module
  • – Repair of timing gears and chain, belt, and guides
  • After repairs, carbon cleaning the engine

How serious is the P0016 fault code?

Spark plugs that are clogged with carbon can misfire and become dirty. Engine damage can result from failures of the timing chain, tensioner, timing belt, and guides. The vehicle may not start, misfire, or stall if it is used in this manner for long periods. It is important to repair the vehicle as soon as possible.
