What is the P0048 Fault code? What does it stand for?
If the powertrain control module (PCM), detects an out of range or very high operating value within the turbocharger/supercharger boost control solenoid, “A”, circuit, a malfunction code P0048 will be set.
Modern turbocharged cars are equipped with variable geometry turbocharger technology (VGT). The VGT system has adjustable vanes that can be opened and shut to alter boost pressure. These blades can be used to control the turbo independently of engine speed. The flaps will open when the engine is not under heavy load. They close as the load increases. The PCM controls the position of the blade using an electronic solenoid motor or solenoid. It uses a position sensor to determine where the wing is located.
The bypass valve is used to control boost pressure in turbo systems. This valve opens in order to release the boost pressure. These systems are monitored by the PCM using a boost pressure sensor.

Although the fault is only visible when the engine has been under load, it may not be apparent at idle. The turbo pressure increases, causing cracks in the tubing. The cracks can be hidden at low revs and may not show any symptoms.
You should not replace the turbo/supercharger until you have thoroughly tested the bypass valves and wastegate circuits.
