What is P0050 fault code? What is the HO2S heater control circuit (Bank 2 Sensor 1) malfunction description How do I fix the P0050 fault code What are the causes and symptoms for the P0050 error code?

What is the P0050 Fault code? What does it stand for?

A code P0050 means “HO2S Heater Control Circuit Bank 2 Sensor 1”. This code is used to notify the powertrain control module of a potential fault in bank 2 sensor 1 heater circuit. “Bank 2” is the row that doesn’t contain cylinder 1. “Sensor 1”, refers to the sensor 1 that is upstream of the catalytic converter.

An engine must have a specific ratio of fuel to air (14.7:1) in order to function properly. The heated oxygen sensors (HO2S) are used by the PCM to accomplish this. The oxygen sensors’ job is to measure oxygen levels in exhaust and transmit information to the PCM for adjusting the air-fuel ratio. For a conventional oxygen sensor to send a voltage signal to the PCM, it must reach a temperature of about 527°F. To transmit precise data to the PCM, they must be at an operating temperature. Some oxygen sensors have a heater to quickly reach operating temperature. The engine can be inserted into the closed loop quicker and emissions are decreased.

You can also set the P0051 and/or P0052 error codes.

What is the P0050 Fault Code?

  • – Bank 2 sensor 1: Defective heated oxygen sensor
  • – An issue with the oxygen sensor circuit (damaged wiring, loose connections).
  • – Burn the fuse for the heating element
  • If equipped, – Short circuit or open in the O2 sensor heater’s battery supply
  • – Defective PCM

What are the symptoms for P0050 fault code?

  • – Illumination for check engine lights
  • – An increase in fuel consumption
  • – Low engine performance

How do I fix the P0050 fault code?

Over time, oxygen sensors can wear out and eventually fail. Before they can be replaced, oxygen sensors should be tested. A short circuit could indicate that the fuse has blown. The fuse must be also changed after the cables are repaired.

  • – Replacing heated oxygen sensor (Bank 2 Sens 1)
  • – Replace the fuse in the heating element
  • Repair of damaged or open cables
  • – PCM replacement (rarely)
