What is P0058 fault code and what does it mean? What is the description for the HO2S Heating Control Circuit High (Bank 2 Sensor 2) malfunction? How can you fix the fault code P0058? What are the causes and symptoms for the P0058 fault code

What is the P0058 fault code? What does it stand for?

When the powertrain control module, PCM detects that the voltage signal coming from the oxygen sensor’s heater is higher than expected, a code P0058 will be set. “Bank 2” in the definition of the code refers to the side of the engine that does not contain the number one cylinder. “Sensor 2”, refers to the sensor that is farthest from engine assembly. It means that the sensor is located farthest from the engine assembly.

The oxygen sensors’ job is to measure oxygen levels in the exhaust system. They can be found in the exhaust pipe, manifold, or downstream of the manifold. The PCM relies upon data from oxygen sensors to regulate and control the air/fuel mixture. The second sensor (Sensor 2) is used to monitor the catalytic converter’s efficiency.

To reach operating temperature faster, most oxygen sensors have a heating element. They produce more precise and sensitive information when they reach operating temperatures. The PCM monitors heater circuits continuously for abnormalities or faults. It illuminates the check engine lamp along with a fault number to notify the driver. Other fault codes are P0037 and P0038.

What is the P0058 Fault Code and Why Does It Happen?

There are many reasons to set fault code “P0058”

  • – Defective oxygen sensor (Bank 2 Sensor 2)
  • – Short circuit problems with the PCM circuit and the oxygen sensor heater circuit
  • – Damage to wiring harnesses or connectors

What are the symptoms for P0058 fault code?

A code P0058 might not show any symptoms, other than the check engine lamp coming on.

  • – Illumination for the check engine light
  • – Reduced engine performance
  • – Increased fuel consumption

How do I fix the P0058 fault code?

There are three possible repair methods for this code.

  • – Check the oxygen sensor for faults and replace it (Bank 2 Sensor 2).
  • – Repair of cables from the O2 sensor connector to the PCM.
  • – A very unlikely replacement for the PCM

How serious is the P0058 Fault code?

The environment is the only thing at risk when this code has been set. The sensor will not reach its operating temperature until the heater on the O2 sensor has failed.
