What is the fault code P0071? What is the Ambient Temperature Sensor Range/Performance Failure description? How do I fix the P0071 fault code What are the symptoms and causes for the P0071 fault code

What is the P0071 Fault code? What does it stand for?

Fault code P0071 will trigger if the powertrain control module, PCM detects that data coming from the Ambient Air Temperature sensor (AAT), is not consistent with data coming from the Engine Intake Air Temperature sensor (IAT), and Engine Coolant Temperature sensor (ECT).

The AAT sensor transmits temperature data to the PCM in the form of a voltage signal. This information is used for controlling the operation and to display outside temperature.

The PCM compares AAT sensor data with IAT/ECT data when the ignition key turns on after a long cool down period. It monitors the sensors even after the engine has been fully warmed up. If data from the sensors is inconsistent, P0071 fault code can be set.

What causes the P0071 Fault code?

  • – Defective ambient air temperature sensor (AAT)
  • – Short circuit in the AAT sensor wiring
  • – Broken or damaged cables and loose connectors
  • – Sensor has been contaminated with foreign objects
  • – Defective PCM (very rare)

What are the symptoms of the P0071 Trouble code?

  • – Illumination for the check engine light
  • – Your air conditioner might not be functioning properly
  • – Incorrect readings in the interior air temperature display

How do I fix the P0071 fault code?

  • – Repair of damaged or short-circuited cables
  • – Cleaning of corroded connections and/or electrical cables
  • – Cleaning and replacing the ambient temperature sensor

The Power Control Module (PCM), should be checked in rare instances. Although this is rare, it is still possible.

How Serious Is the P0071 Fault Coding?

As long as the code does not stop the vehicle working properly, P0071 is not considered to be serious. Sometimes, the climate control system (heat/cold climate controls) may stop working properly in some cases. This can cause irritation depending on the weather conditions.
