What is the fault code P0072? What is the description for Ambient Air Temperature Sensor Circuit Low malfunction? How can I fix P0072 fault code What are the causes and symptoms of the P0072 error code?

What is the P0072 Fault code? What does it signify?

If the powertrain control module, PCM detects that the voltage signal coming from the Ambient Temperature (AAT sensor) is lower than manufacturer’s specifications, a code P0072 will be set.

The AAT sensor converts ambient air temperature into an electrical signal and sends it back to the PCM. This information can be used to control the operation of the air conditioner and to display the temperature outside.

In addition to the AAT sensor information, the PCM also uses information about the intake air temperature sensor (IAT) and engine coolant temperature sensor (ECT). The AAT sensor signal is compared to the IAT or ECT signals when a cold engine starts for the first time. The PCM continues monitoring the sensors to verify accuracy, even after the engine has been fully warmed up. Fault code P0072 is activated if the PCM detects conflict between sensors.

This code is most often set to indicate electrical problems. The steps for troubleshooting may vary depending on the manufacturer, AAT sensor type and wire colors.

P0072 fault codes can be found on many vehicles, including, but not limited, to Audi, BMW and Chrysler models.

What causes the P0072 Fault code?

Below are some reasons to set fault code P0072:

  • – Defective ambient air temperature sensor (AAT)
  • AAT sensor wiring – Open or Short Circuit
  • – Broken, rusty, or damaged wires and connectors
  • – Sensor has been contaminated with foreign objects
  • – Very unlikely: Defective PCM

What are the symptoms for P0072 fault code?

You may experience the following symptoms if your vehicle has the code P0072:

  • Illumination of the check engine light
  • Air conditioners may not be working properly
  • – Incorrect readings of the interior temperature display

How to Fix the P0072 Fault Code

When diagnosing code P0072, the most common error is to replace the ambient temperature sensor without first checking the wiring and connector.

The following repairs may be able to resolve the P0072 fault code:

  • – Repair of damaged or short-circuited cables
  • – Cleaning of corroded electrical circuits and connectors
  • – Clean or replace the ambient temperature sensor

The Power Control Module (PCM), should be checked in rare instances. This is a rare but possible possibility.

How Serious Is the P0072 Fault Coding?

As long as the code P0072 does not hinder vehicle operation, it is not considered serious. In certain cases, the climate control system (heat/cold climate controls) may stop working properly. This can cause irritation depending on the weather conditions.
