What is the P0077 fault code What is the description of Intake Valve Control Solenoid Circuit High, Bank 1? How can you fix the fault code P0077? What are the causes and symptoms of the P0077 error code?

What is the P0077 Fault code? What does it stand for?

If the powertrain controller module (PCM), detects that voltage signal from intake valve control solenoid is higher than manufacturer’s specifications, P0077 is set. The code’s description refers to the engine bank in which cylinder 1 is located. The intake valve control solenoid can be found on the intake manifold side.

The camshafts of older engines are permanently synchronized to their crankshaft. This allows you to open or close the intake or exhaust valves at a specific time. Modern engines allow you to adjust the camshaft position using variable valve timing (VVT). This improves engine performance and fuel economy.

The intake valve control solenoid is an important part of the VVT system. The PCM regulates the engine oil flow through the solenoid to control the camshaft position.

To monitor and control the solenoid, the PCM uses a pulse-width modulated signal (Pulse width Modulation / PWM). The solenoid controls oil flow to an actuator at the end of camshaft. The actuator’s position is changed by applying oil pressure. This affects the timing of the valve. When the PCM detects voltage signals exceeding factory specifications, a code P0077 will be generated. This is when oil pressure is applied to the intake camshaft actuator.

This code is similar P0075 and to some extent P0076. Sometimes, P0077 and the fault code P0026 may be combined. The P0077 fault code can be applied to vehicles made by Hyundai, Kia or Porsche as well as Nissan, Chevrolet, Nissan, and other manufacturers.

What causes the P0077 Fault code?

Below are some reasons to set fault code P0077:

  • – Affected intake valve control solenoid bank 1
  • – Broken wires to control solenoid, loose, rusty connectors and short circuit problems
  • – Low engine oil
  • – Use of low viscosity or dirty engine oil
  • – Defective PCM (rarely)

What are the symptoms of P0077 malfunction code?

You may experience the following symptoms if your vehicle has the code P0077:

  • – Illumination for the check engine light
  • – Hesitation during acceleration
  • – An increase in fuel consumption
  • – Issues with the engine performance (hard starting or idling irregularity etc.

How to Fix the P0077 Fault Code

The make and model of your vehicle may have different requirements regarding the repair and definition of fault code P0077. Vehicle VVT systems and methods may vary. You should follow the manufacturer’s instructions and do your research before you replace any component.

Here are some of the possible repairs that could resolve the P0077 fault codes:

  • – To determine if codes will return, it is important to first clear them all.
  • – In the event that the code returns, you should inspect the control solenoid wiring. Cables that are damaged, broken, or loose, as well as corroded connections, should all be repaired and cleaned.
  • – Make sure to check the engine oil. It should be replaced if it isn’t.
  • – If the solenoid of your intake valve is damaged, you should inspect it and replace it.

How serious is the P0077 Fault code?

Modern engines with variable valve timing include an integral part called the intake valve control sonoid. This maximizes fuel economy and improves acceleration. When P0077 is present, the variable valve timing system will not function properly. This code should be treated seriously and rectified as soon as possible.
