What is the P0081 fault code What is the Intake Valve Control Solenoid Circuit Bank 2 malfunction description? How to fix P0081 fault codes? What are the symptoms and causes for the P0081 fault code

What is the P0081 fault code? What does it signify?

If the powertrain controller module (PCM), determines that voltage signal from intake valve control solenoid is not conforming to manufacturer’s specifications, P0081 will trigger. The code description states that “Bank 2” refers the engine bank without the #1 cylinder. The intake valve solenoid is typically mounted on the intake side of the cylinderhead.

Modern vehicles come standard with Variable Valve Timing, (VVT) which regulates the opening and closing of the intake or exhaust valves. This system improves the vehicle’s engine performance and fuel efficiency.

The intake valve control solenoid is an essential component of the VVT systems. The PCM regulates the engine oil flow through the solenoid to control the camshaft position.

To monitor and control the solenoid, the PCM uses a pulse-width modulated signal (Pulse width Modulation / PWM). The solenoid controls the oil flow to an actuator attached at the end of camshaft. Oil pressure applied to the actuator will change the position of the camshaft and alter the timing. When the PCM detects an issue with the solenoid, which applies oil pressure to actuator’s intake camshaft camshaft actuator, a code P0081 will be set.

This code is similar P0082 and to some extent P0083. Sometimes, P0081 and P0028 may be combined. There are many vehicles that fall prey to the P0081 fault code, including models from Nissan and Opel, Jeep, Chevrolets, Infinitis, Ford, Infiniti, Ford, and Jeep.

What is the P0081 Fault Code?

Here are some reasons why P0081 should be set.

  • – Bank 2: Defective intake valve control solenoid
  • – Repair of damaged wires that control solenoid, loose or open connections, or other issues
  • Low engine oil
  • – Using engine oil with a low viscosity.
  • – Defective PCM (rarely)

What are the P0081 Malfunction Code Symptoms

You may experience the following symptoms if your vehicle has the code P0081:

  • – Illumination at the check engine lights
  • – Hesitation during acceleration
  • – Engine performance problems (hard starting, irregular idling, etc.
  • – An increase in fuel consumption

How do I fix the P0081 fault code?

The make and model of your vehicle may have different requirements regarding the repair and definition of fault code P0081. There may be differences in the VVT systems or methods used in vehicles. You should follow the manufacturer’s instructions and do your research before you replace any component.

Here are some of the possible repairs that could resolve the P0081 fault code:

  • First, make sure all codes are cleared. Next, test the road to confirm if they will come back.
  • If the code is returned, it is important to inspect the harness. You should clean and repair any damaged or broken wires, loose connections or corroded connectors to your control solenoid.
  • – Check the engine oil. If it is not there, you should replace it.
  • – Intake valve control solenoid (Bank 2) should always be inspected for damage. If it is defective, the solenoid should be replaced.
  • – If the fault does not resolve after all tests have been performed, the PCM should still be checked.

How serious is the P0081 Fault code?

Modern engines with variable valve timing include an integral component, the intake valve control sonoid. This maximizes fuel economy, and allows for better acceleration. When P0081 is present, the variable valve timing system will not function properly. This code should be taken seriously and fixed as soon as possible.
