What is the P0097 fault number? What is the description for the input malfunction? How do I fix the P0097 fault code What are the causes of the P0097 fault codes?

What is the P0097 fault code? What does it stand for?

If the powertrain control module, PCM detects a voltage signal coming from the intake temperature sensor 2 circuit which is lower than the manufacturer’s range, a code P0097 will be generated.

The IAT sensor measures temperature of air entering the engine. The sensor comes with a built in thermometer, or thermistor, which measures the air temperature and sends the voltage signals to the computer. The air temperature data will affect the resistance of the IAT sensor. The resistance at the IAT sensor will decrease with increasing air temperature. Conversely, a decrease in temperature will cause the sensor to produce high voltage signals. The P0097 code is stored in the memory of the PCM if it detects a voltage signal from sensor #2.

There are many vehicles that can be affected by the P0097 fault code, including models from Chevrolet (especially Cruze), Ford and GMC.

What causes the P0097 Fault code?

The following are possible triggers for the P0097 code:

  • – Defective IAT sensor 2
  • – Unreasonably high intake of air temperatures
  • – Problems with wiring that cause an open circuit in the sensor system
  • – Short or open circuit in wires and connectors for PCM
  • – Defective PCM

What are the symptoms for P0097 fault code?

  • – Illumination at the check engine lights
  • – Low engine performance
  • – Engine hesitation during acceleration
  • Depending on the temperature outside, the engine can be run in either rich or lean conditions.
  • – Increased fuel consumption

How to Fix the P0097 Fault Code

To determine if the code is returning, it’s important to first clear all codes. Then, a road test should also be performed. If the code comes back, it is important to inspect the wiring harness and the electrical connections that connect to the intake air temperature sensor.

  • – Replacement and testing of the IAT 2 sensor
  • Repair of damaged cable to the sensor circuit
  • – Reparing the connector to the PCM that is causing the open circuit
  • – Replace the PCM if it fails to pass the testing procedures

How Serious Is the P0097 Fault Coding?

In certain cases, the code P0097 does not indicate any malfunction. The engine may lose performance if it does not. It can lead to the engine running very lean or rich, depending on the outside temperature. It can cause the engine to run irregularly and even hesitate. May fail to pass engine emission tests. This can cause carbon build up in the engine if the vehicle is driven in this manner.
