What is P0098 fault code and what does it mean? What is the description for the Intake Air Temperature Sensor 2 Circuit High malfunction How can I fix the P0098 fault code What are the symptoms and causes for the P0098 fault code
What is the P0098 fault code? What does it stand for?
If the powertrain controller module (PCM), detects a voltage from the intake heat (IAT2) sensor 2 circuit, it will trigger a P0098 code. This is when the manufacturer’s recommended range is exceeded.
The IAT sensor measures temperature of air entering the engine. This sensor includes an internal thermistor, which measures the air temperature and sends the voltage signals to the computer. The air temperature data will affect the resistance of the IAT sensor. A decrease in temperature will cause a decrease in resistance. A decrease in temperature will cause the sensor to generate a high voltage signal. The P0098 code is stored in the memory of the PCM if it detects voltage signals at sensor #2 higher than factory settings (more that 5V).
The P0098 fault code can affect vehicles from Ford (especially Focus and Transit), Mazda, Honda, Hyundai and Chevrolet as well as Nissan and Toyota.
What is the P0098 Fault Code?
The following are possible triggers for the P0098 fault code:
- – Defective IAT sensor 2
- – Problems with wiring that cause an open circuit in the sensor system
- – Connectors and wires that connect to the PCM can be either open or closed circuit
- – Defective PCM
What are the symptoms of the P0098 Fault code?
- – Illumination at the check engine lights
- Low engine performance
- – Engine hesitation during acceleration
- Depending on outside temperature, the engine can run in either rich- or lean conditions.
- – An increase in fuel consumption
How do I fix the P0098 fault code?
All codes should be cleared first. Next, conduct a road test to determine if the codes return. Visual inspection should be done on the wiring harness and electrical connections to the intake temperature sensor if the code is returned.
- – Replacement and testing of the IAT 2 sensor
- – Repair of damage to the cable that runs through the sensor circuit
- – Reparing the connector that connects to the PCM, causing an open circuit
- – Replace the PCM if it fails to pass the testing procedures
How serious is the P0098 Fault code?
In some cases, fault code P0098 does not indicate malfunction. The engine may lose performance if it is not corrected. It can lead to the engine running very lean or rich, depending on the outside temperature. It can cause the engine to run unsteadily and hesitate.
