What is the P0116 fault number? What is the ECT Sensor Circuit Range/Performance Failure description? How do I fix the P0116 fault code What are the causes and symptoms of the P0116 error code?
What is the P0116 Fault code? What does it all mean?
The Engine Coolant temperature (ECT) sensor, one of many devices that relays data to your vehicle’s primary computer (PCM/ECM/ECU), is one example. The PCM uses the input from this sensor to control engine operation and cool fan operation. When the sensor emits an illogical or erratic signal, code P0116 will be triggered.
The ECT sensor can be used as a thermistor. Its resistance changes in response to temperature. It’s a 2-wire sensor that is typically found in the coolant passage or engine block. The PCM is connected to one of the wires for a 5 Volt reference. Grounding is the second.
The resistance of the ECT sensor is affected by changes in coolant temperature. This information is used by PCM to determine current operating temperatures of the engine. The PCM will adjust the operating conditions based on incorrect information received from the sensor. This can lead to increased fuel consumption and a failure of the engine cooling systems. Fault code P0116 will be set if the voltage signals sent by the ECT sensor are not within the range that was specified by the manufacturer.
Code P0116 is frequently associated with codes like P0115 or P0118, and P0119. To resolve the P0116 fault code, it is necessary to first address any of these codes that are illuminated. The thermostat is often the source of the problem.
What causes the P0116 Fault code?
- – Low engine coolant level
- – Sensor for Defective Engine Coolant Temperature
- – Faulty ECT sensor cable or connection connections
- Poor electrical connection to ECT sensor
- – Open or defective thermostats
- – Engine overheating
- Below specifications engine temperature
- – An issue with the PCM such as software that requires an update
What are the symptoms of P0116 Malfunction code?
- – Check that the engine light is illuminated. The PCM can set the vehicle into fail-safe mode.
- – A decrease in engine performance (engine might stall until heated up, or stall at idle).
- – The engine can not be started when it is cold, but it can start normally when it’s warm.
- – Increased fuel use
- – Engine overheating
- – Exhaust fumes emitting black smoke
How to Fix the P0116 Fault Code
- – Test and replace the thermostat
- – Testing and replacement of the ECT sensor
- – Repairing damaged or short-circuited cables, and replacing connectors
How Serious Is the P0116 Fault Code
Safe mode will be activated by the vehicle when it detects fault code P0116. The engine may misfire or run erratically in safe mode until it warms up. It is important to fix the problem as soon possible.
