What is the P0158 fault code What is the O2 Sensor Circuit Low Voltage (Bank 2, Sensor 2) malfunction description. How do I fix the P0158 fault code What are the symptoms and causes for the P0158 fault code
What is the P0158 fault code? What does it all mean?
After combustion, the catalytic converter reduces harmful emissions from the exhaust. The catalyst’s O2 sensor monitors the exhaust oxygen content to ensure it is working efficiently. This sensor is also known as the “downstream oxygen sensor” (or “Sensor 2”) The PCM (Powertrain Controller Module) compares this sensor to oxygen sensor data before and after the catalyst in order determine if the catalyst works properly. This sensor is also known by the “Sensor 1” (or upstream oxygen sensor).
“Bank 2”, refers to the engine row. “Bank 1” refers to the engine bank that has cylinder number 1. “Bank 2” refers to the engine row. It is important to remember that sequential system vehicles only have one row of engines. This is why you will often see this code on boxer engines or 6/8-cylinder engines.
The O2 sensor downstream should produce a constant voltage around 0.45V. The mixture of air and fuel is considered rich if the O2 sensor’s voltage is higher than 0.45V. The O2 sensor is indicating that there is not enough air for ideal combustion. The air-fuel mixture will be lean if the O2 sensor’s voltage signal is lower than 0.45V. This is a sign that ideal combustion requires very large amounts of air.
If the voltage signal from O2 sensor downstream exceeds a specific range for a period of time, the PCM will issue fault code P0158.
What is the P0158 Fault Code and Why Does It Happen?
- – Short circuits in sensor wiring could lead to damage
- – Defective oxygen sensor (Bank 2 Sensor 2)
- – Defective oxygen sensor heater circuit
- – Defective engine coolant temperature sensor
- – Rich engine running
- – Excessive fuel pressure
- – Exhaust leaks
- – A PCM that is not working or requires a software upgrade
What are the symptoms of P0158 Malfunction Code?
- – Illumination for check engine light
- – Run the engine in a rich mixture
- – Hard start
- – Engine freezing when cold
- – Increased fuel use
- – Idle speed irregularity
- – Excessive exhaust smoke
How do I fix the P0158 fault code?
- Repair oxygen sensor wiring that is damaged, shorted or exposed.
- – Inspect exhaust components and fix any leaks
- – Repair any damage to reduce excessive fuel pressure
- If necessary, replace the engine coolant temperature sensor
- – Replace the oxygen sensor in Bank 2 Sensor 2.
- If necessary, replace or update the power control modules (PCM).
How serious is the P0158 Fault code?
Fault code P0158 means that the vehicle is unable to stop. This code should be corrected as soon possible to avoid any driving problems.
