What is the P0176 Fault code? What does it all mean?
The code P0176 indicates that the powertrain controller module (PCM), receives an abnormal voltage from the fuel composition sensors circuit. This circuit is also known by the flexfuel sensor circuit.
The fuel composition sensor can measure the amount ethanol in gasoline for flex fuel vehicles (FFV). Ethanol, a light, fragrant, and flammable alcohol made from corn, is found in nearly every gallon gasoline at a rate of 10% (E10). While it is not a problem with most vehicles, high ethanol levels can lead to engine failure in uncalibrated models. E10 is recommended for engines. However, flex fuel vehicles can run on E85 or higher ethanol concentrations.
The PCM must know the amount of gasoline and ethanol in order to improve engine performance. The fuel composition sensor measures the amount of gasoline and ethanol in the mixture.
