What is the P0198 fault number? What is Engine Oil Temperature Sensor High Failure? How can I fix P0198 fault codes? What are the causes and symptoms of the P0198 error code?

What is the P0198 Fault code? What does it all mean?

If the powertrain control module, (PCM), detects that the voltage signal coming from the engine oil temperature sensor (EOT) is higher than specified by the manufacturer, a code P0198 will be set. This code is for high voltage in any or all EOT sensor circuits, and extremely low engine oil temperatures.

To monitor engine oil temperature, the PCM uses data from the EOT sensor. This information is used to calculate fuel quality, timing of injection and glow plug operation. The PCM usually sends the EOT sensor a reference voltage of five volts. The EOT sensor’s internal resistance will change with engine oil temperature and send a return signal to the PCM. The EOT sensor can be described as a negative temperature coefficient (NTC thermistor). The temperature of the oil is an inversely proportional indicator of the internal resistance. The voltage signal is proportional to the temperature of the oil. If the temperature rises, it decreases. For diagnostic purposes, the signal from the sensor can be compared to other sensors such as the intake oil temperature (IAT), and the engine coolant (ECT) sensors. If the PCM detects a voltage signal from an engine oil temperature sensor that is higher than the manufacturer’s parameters, the P0198 code is set.

The P0198 fault code can affect vehicles of all makes and models, including but not limited to Ford, Nissan, Volkswagen or Chrysler.

What is the P0198 Fault Code?

Here are some reasons why P0198 should be set:

  • – Defective engine oil temperature sensor
  • – Damaged wires and connectors.
  • – Malfunctions in the engine cooling system
  • – Defective PCM (rarely)

What are the symptoms of P0198 Malfunction Code?

You may experience the following symptoms if your vehicle has a P0198 code:

  • – Illumination at the check engine lights
  • – Reduce engine oil temperature
  • – Set fault codes in relation to engine coolant temperature

How do I fix the P0198 fault code?

The following repairs may be able to resolve the P0198 fault code:

  • Repair of damaged wires, connectors, or open or brief circuits to the engine temperature sensor circuit.
  • – How to replace a defective engine oil temperature sensor
  • – How to handle low engine oil temperatures
  • – Repair of any malfunction in the cooling system
  • – Removing a defective PCM (rarely).
