What is the P0236 Fault code? What does it all mean?

The powertrain control unit (PCM), continuously monitors and controls the turbo pressure. Fault code 0236 is issued if the measured turbo pressure exceeds the desired turbo pressure.

You need to know three things in order to diagnose this code: What is turbo pressure? What is turbo pressure? How does it get measured?

Vacuum is created in an ordinary non-turbo engine when the pistons move down during the intake stroke. It’s similar to how a syringe draws fluid in. This vacuum allows the fuel mixture and air to be drawn into the combustion chamber. The turbocharger system works in the same way as a pump that is driven by exhaust gases. The fuel/air mixture is supplied to an engine via force and larger volumes, not suction. The turbo pressure is applied to the pistons, causing them to compress before they begin their compression stroke. This increases engine power.

Turbo pressure can be controlled by how much exhaust gases are allowed to pass through it. The turbo spins at a faster speed if the exhaust gases are larger than the turbo’s limit. The wastegate, which is the bypass valve for exhaust gases, routes them around the turbo. The bypass valve opening is controlled by the PCM, which controls turbo pressure. This is done by closing and opening the wastegate according to need. A vacuum motor is attached to or near the turbocharger. Through a control solenoid, the PCM regulates the vacuum level to the motor.

The turbo pressure sensor measures the pressure in the intake manifold. The P0236 fault code will be triggered if the PCM detects that pressure readings are outside the desired range.

The P0236 fault code can affect many vehicles, including but not limited to Skoda and Jaguar, Duramax and Range Rover models, as well as Volvo, Audi, Alfa Romeos, Chevrolet, Volkswagen, Ford, Saturn, and Hyundai.

 

What is the P0236 Fault Code?

Here are some reasons why P0236 should be set.

  • – Turbo pressure sensor is clogged with carbon or dirt
  • – Defective turbo pressure sensor
  • – Damaged wires, connectors, and water to the turbo pressure sensor can cause open or short circuit problems
  • Turbo Hoses that have cracked, fallen or become bent
  • Air leaks in the turbocharger/intake manifold
  • – Leakage or clogging of vacuum lines
  • – Defective turbo control solenoid
  • – The wastegate is stuck or faulty
  • – Defective PCM (rarely)

 

What are the symptoms for P0236 fault code?

These symptoms may be present in vehicles with code P0236.

  • – Illumination for the check engine light
  • – Engine control module can disable turbo
  • – Lower engine performance
  • – Loss in power during acceleration
  • – Engine Overheating (high temperatures may cause engine knock).
  • – Excessive exhaust smoke (especially at high engine speeds).
  • – Spark plugs contaminated

Note: Fault code P0236 means that the PCM disregards the actual manifold and instead uses a default one. It reduces the fuel quantity and timing of injection, which can lead to reduced engine performance.
