What is the P0251 Fault code? What does it all mean?
P0251 fault code is set only in diesel vehicles. Common-rail diesel injection systems all use a component called an “electronic fuel control actuator” To measure the fuel quantity delivered by the high pressure diesel fuel pumps. This component controls the fuel rail’s fuel pressure and fuel amount.
The fuel rail pressure must be controlled within a very narrow range. This is why most applications use a variable resist fuel rail pressure (FRP), sensor.
FRP sensors are used to measure fuel injectors. The FRP sensor converts the signal into an electric signal and sends this information to powertrain control module. Using this signal, the PCM can adjust the amount of fuel that should be sent to an engine based on operating conditions. If the sensor data does not match what is stored in the PCM’s RAM, the fault code P0251 is activated.
The high pressure injection pump is usually mounted near the fuel metering control circuit for injection pump fuel. - – Engine misfires at idle
How to Fix the P0251 Fault Code
There are several repairs that can resolve the P0251 fault code.
- – Locate and turn on the fuel rail pressure sensors (FRP). Make sure to inspect the connector as well as all cables. You can repair or replace damaged components. You can also check the connector’s terminals.
- Delete the code, and then see if the code comes back.
- – Check the FRP sensor and circuit for code returns. Next, disconnect the fuel rail pressure connector. Next, connect the black wire from a voltmeter with the ground terminal of the harness connector. The red wire should be connected to the power terminal. Turn the key until the engine is off and the ignition switch is on. It should be between 5-12 volts. Refer to the specifications of your manufacturer. Repair the ground or power wire if it is not in accordance with manufacturer’s specifications.
- – Connect the red multimeter cable to the terminal of your signal wire. It should have 5 volts. If it is not, you should repair the signal cables.
- – Replace FRP sensor.
