What is the P0337 fault code? What does it signify?
Fault code P0337 means that the crankshaft of your vehicle is having problems due to low voltage. Three things are required for a vehicle’s to be able to move: air, fuel, and ignition. Modern vehicles have a fourth component, the powertrain control module (PCM). Simply put, the high-tech product determines how much fuel is needed based on the measured volume of air at any given moment. The signal is then sent to the spark plugs. This process occurs hundreds of times a second. These processes must be performed at the correct time. Here are the camshaft position sensors (CMP), and crankshaft position sensor (CKP).
Two important functions are performed by the crankshaft position sensor. This sensor calculates the engine’s revolutions per hour (RPM) for the PCM. The PCM also uses this sensor to calculate the position and dead center of the 1st piston. The PCM can perform all functions we described above with the RPM and RPM. This is essential for vehicles to run.
A P0337 code is issued if the PCM fails to detect sufficient voltage from a crankshaft position sensor. Other crankshaft position sensor fault codes are P0336 and P0338.
P0337 fault codes can be found on many vehicles, including those made by Volkswagen, Audi and Volvo, Dodge, Peugeot and Volvo.
What is the P0337 Fault Code?
Here are some reasons why P0337 should be set.
- – Defective crankshaft position sensor
- – Incorrectly placed sensor
- – Defective starter or dead battery
- – Broken, loose, dislodged or incorrectly installed reluctor wheel
- – Crankshaft position sensor connector problems (e.g. rusted, damp, damaged, etc.)
- – Crankshaft position sensor circuit problems (e.g. Damaged wires, loose connections, electromagnetic interference, etc.
- – A distorted signal between sensor & reluctor wheel
- PCM issues
What are the symptoms of the P0337 Fault Code?
These symptoms may be present in vehicles with code P0337.
- – Illumination for check engine light
- – Hard or impossible to start the engine
- – Increased fuel consumption
- – Reduced engine power
- – Engine hesitation during acceleration
- – Engine shaking, or jolting
- Tachometer is not working correctly or shows an error
- – Misfire of one cylinder or more
- – Engine not starting after stalling
How do I fix the P0337 fault code?
The following repairs may be able to resolve the P0337 fault code:
- – Replacing the damaged relay wheel
- – Repair of or replacement crankshaft position sensor wiring or circuits
- Repair or replacement of damaged crankshaft position sensor.
- – Repair of engine misfires if necessary
- – Replacing a defective crankshaft position sensor
- – Replacing an inoperative starter or dead battery
- – Replacing/reprogramming the PCM
Most mechanics recommend replacing the sensor immediately once P0337 is set. Before replacing the sensor, we recommend you inspect the entire system. While most sensors will last a while, P0337 can set if there is a problem with the connection. A new sensor won’t cost you much more if you can do the job with one solder.
The air gap between sensor and reluctor wheel has been fixed. Some engines come with a set screw for adjusting the clearance. New sensors are equipped with a piece of paper at one end. This allows you to adjust the gap. Place the sensor flat onto the tooth. You can check the motor by turning it manually to ensure it isn’t interfering. An incorrectly aligned sensor will produce a weak signal when it is time to start the engine.
A P0337 code can be caused by either a dead starter motor or a bad battery. When the engine is turned on, the PCM waits to receive a signal from CKP. A weak CKP signal means that the engine doesn’t spin fast enough due either to a low or worn starter motor. You should make sure to fix the starter motor and battery issues immediately.
Before replacing any sensor, PCM or other electronic component, ensure that you have good wiring.
How serious is the P0337 Code of Fault?
This code will likely cause the engine to not start when it is set. Therefore, it should be considered serious. Even if the engine runs, it might stall. This can result in serious driving safety problems.
