What is P0338 fault code and how can it be fixed? How can I fix the P0338 fault? What are the causes and symptoms of the P0338 fault code error?

What is the P0338 Fault code? What does it signify?

The P0338 fault code means that the crankshaft has a problem with high voltage. To make a vehicle move, it needs three things: fuel, air, and ignition. A fourth component of modern vehicles is the powertrain controller module (PCM). This high-tech product calculates the amount of fuel that must be injected based upon the air volume measured at any time. The signal is then sent to the spark plugs. This process occurs hundreds of times a second. These processes must be performed at the correct time. The crankshaft position (CKP), camshaft location (CMP), sensors are crucial.

The crankshaft position sensors perform two functions. The sensor calculates the engine’s revolutions per hour (RPM) for the PCM. It also allows the PCM calculate the position of 1st Cylinder, known as the top dead centre (TDC). This is the second essential task. The PCM can perform all functions we described above with the RPM and RPM. This is essential for vehicles to run.

Code P0338 will be set if the PCM detects high voltage coming from the crankshaft positioning sensor. Other crankshaft sensor fault codes include P0336 and P0337.

P0338 fault codes can be found on vehicles made by Opel, GM and Peugeot.

What causes the P0338 Fault code?

Here are some reasons why P0338 should be set.

  • – Defective crankshaft position sensor
  • – Crankshaft position sensor connector problems (e.g. rusted, damp, damaged, etc.)
  • – Crankshaft position sensor circuit problems (e.g. Damaged wires, loose connections, electromagnetic interference, etc.
  • – Broken timing belt
  • – Incorrectly placed sensor
  • – Damaged reluctor wheels (eg broken or loose, dislodged incorrectly, etc.).
  • – Signal distortion between sensor and reluctor wheels
  • Overcharging alternator causes PCM to be affected
  • – Programming error or defective PCM

What are the symptoms for the P0338 fault code?

These symptoms may be present in vehicles with code P0338.

  • – Illumination at the check engine lights
  • – The engine is difficult or not starting
  • – An increase in fuel consumption
  • – Engine hesitation during acceleration
  • – Reduced engine performance
  • – Engine misfires, shaking or jolting
  • Tachometer is not working correctly or shows an error
  • – Engine stalling but not restarting

You may not feel any symptoms in some cases. Some PCMs use the camshaft positioning sensor to determine the crankshaft’s position.

How to Fix the P0338 Fault Code

There are several repairs that can resolve the P0338 fault code.

  • – Replace the crankshaft position sensor
  • Repair or replacement damaged crankshaft position sensor wires and circuits
  • Repair or replacement for a damaged crankshaft position sensor connector
  • – Replacing the damaged reluctor wheels
  • – Replacing damaged timing belt
  • – Reprogramming or replacing the PCM

Most mechanics recommend replacing the sensor immediately once P0338 is set. Before replacing the sensor, we recommend you inspect the entire system. While most sensors will last a while, P0338 can set if there is a problem with the connection. If you only need one solder, you won’t pay more for a new sensor.

The air gap between the sensor’s and the reluctor wheels is constant. Some engines include a set screw that adjusts the clearance. The majority of new sensors come with a piece paper at the end to allow you to set the gap. The sensor should be placed flat on the tooth. To ensure that the motor is not interfering with other things, turn it by hand. An incorrectly aligned sensor will produce a weak signal when it is time to start the engine.

Before replacing any sensor, PCM or other electronic component, ensure that you have the right wiring.

How serious is the P0338 Fault code?

Fault code 0338 can lead to serious issues in your vehicle. If you are fortunate, the check engine lamp will only be an issue. This code can also be used to diagnose other problems. It is possible that your vehicle won’t start. Even if your vehicle starts, it might stall or stop working. This could lead to significant safety issues for drivers. After the code has been set, it should immediately be checked by a professional mechanic.
