What is the P0400 fault code? What does it all mean?
The OBD-II scanner will give you the P0400 fault code. This indicates that there may be an issue with your vehicle’s Exhaust Gas Recirculation system (EGR). If the Powertrain Control module (PCM/ECM) detects an EGR flow lower than it anticipates, it will record a code of P0400.
The heart of the EGR system is the EGR valve. Its function is to direct some exhaust gas into an engine intake manifold, where it can be incorporated into the air/fuel mixture. This lowers the temperature and nitrogen oxides (NOx) in the cylinders. Your vehicle’s emissions values could increase if it fails.
Older vehicles have the EGR valve controlled directly by the engine vacuum. It is controlled by the PCM in modern and new vehicles. When the PCM detects that the exhaust gases are not flowing to the intake valve or insufficiently flowing, it will trigger the code P0400.
