What is the P0405 Fault code? What does it signify?
EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) systems keep vehicles’ NOx emission levels under control. The Engine Control Module (PCM/ECM) stores fault code 0405 when the sensor that monitors the EGR valve’s position sends signals at lower voltage levels than normal.
The engine’s combustion chamber can reach temperatures of 2,500° Fahrenheit (1,371° Celsius) or higher while the fuel is burning. These high temperatures can cause high levels of NOx gas that can be harmful to the environment and human health.
The EGR valve pulls some of the exhaust gases back into an engine’s intake manifold. Because exhaust gas is inert and replaces oxygen, it can be returned to cylinders to improve NOx (nitrogen oxides), emissions.
The EGR position sensor is used to detect the position of the EGR val. The Engine Control module monitors the EGR sensor position to adjust the EGR vale operation. The P0405 fault code will be triggered if the sensor sends a signal that is lower than the programmed parameters.

What is the P0405 Fault Code?
These are some possible reasons that the PCM could set the P0405 Code:
- – Defective EGR valve position sensor
- – Defective EGR valve
- – Circuit problems, such as loose connections or damaged wiring
- PCM related issues
Note: Sometimes, moisture from cold temperatures can cause the EGR valve stick. The problem might disappear once the vehicle has warmed up. The valve can also become stuck or stuck due to carbon buildup.
What are the symptoms of the P0405 Fault Code?
The vehicle’s driving ability may be affected if the EGR valve position sensor fails. Some vehicles may not exhibit any symptoms. Code P0405 may present as:
- – Continuous, flashing or flashing check engine lights
- – Failure to pass emission tests due to higher NOx emissions
- – Reduced engine performance
- The EGR valve should not be left open for longer than it is necessary. This can cause sudden acceleration hesitations.
- Premature ignition can cause engine knock
- – Increased fuel use
- – Engine stalling/stalling
How to Fix the P0405 Fault Code
- – The codes must be cleared first. A road test should then be conducted to confirm that the code is still valid.
- – Check the cables and connectors for the EGR position sensor. Any loose or damaged connections should be repaired.
- – The PCM should test whether the 5 volt reference signal reaches the sensor.
- – If the cables and connections are in good condition, the EGR Val position sensor and EGR Val should be checked and replaced if necessary.
How serious is the P0405 Fault code?
Fault code P0405 could cause the EGR to be disabled completely. This situation can cause engine performance to be severely affected and a bad driving experience. It is imperative that the problem be fixed as soon as possible.
