What is the fault code P0410? What is Secondary Air Injection System Malfunction? How do you fix P0410 fault code What are the causes and symptoms for the P0410 fault code

What is the P0410 Fault code? What does it signify?

A P0410 error code means that the secondary injection system is not working properly on certain vehicles. This system’s task is to inject air into an engine’s exhaust system, and help with the combustion of unburned gas and hydrocarbon molecules.

The secondary air injection system is composed of a high capacity air pump, often in the form a turbine, a relay that controls the on/off of motor, a solenoid that controls the air flow, check valves, as well as other piping and plumbing.

The air pump uses outside air to reduce the emissions from the exhaust system. It sends the outside air through a one-way valve to each row via an air pump. This code is most often set due to worn or defective valves. Water that naturally occurs in the exhaust can be allowed to return to the pump by a faulty check valve. In cold or humid climates, this water may be too much and partially fill the pump and freeze there. The powertrain control module, or PCM, attempts to activate the pump but the frozen pump is unable to start. This overloads the circuit and causes the fuse to blow.

P0410 fault codes are found in vehicles of various makes, including those made by Peugeot, Ford and Subaru.

What causes the P0410 Fault code?

Here are some reasons why P0410 should be set.

  • – Check valve(s) for a defective air injection pump
  • – A defective air injection pump
  • – Defective vacuum lines, or air control solenoid
  • – Clogged air injector system air ducts or catalyst
  • – Increased exhaust back pressure can cause partial clogging of catalytic converters
  • – A defective air injection system relay or blow fuse
  • – Water collection at vent solenoid, air pump
  • Leaky pipes or hoses in the system
  • – Exhaust components damaged (holes).
  • – Damaged wiring or loose connections can cause open or short circuits to the pump’s wiring

What are the symptoms for P0410 Malfunction Codes?

You may experience the following symptoms if your vehicle has the code P0410.

  • – Illumination at the check engine lights
  • – The exhaust emission control light on some European vehicles may also be illuminated.
  • – Noisy running air injection system pump
  • Excess oxygen may cause the engine to run very rich if it is pumped into its exhaust.
  • Low engine performance
  • – Engine running hard, or not at all
  • Issues with idle stalls
  • – An increase in fuel consumption
  • – Hesitation during sudden accelerations, and recoil in exhaust

How to Fix the P0410 Fault Code

Before diagnosing code 0410, it is important to fix any O2 sensors or other engine trouble codes. Removing the air pump may not be enough to fix the problem. The pump should be cleaned, and the one-way valve replaced.

The following repairs may be able to resolve the P0410 fault code:

  • Replacing a defective air injection pump
  • – Replacing the one-way valve
  • – Replacing an air injection pump relay/fuse that is defective
  • – Replacing slow responding O2 sensors
  • – Removing the blocked air injection pump suction filtration
  • – Replacing the air control valve
  • – Reparing or replacing wiring harnesses
  • – Fixing exhaust system leaks

How Serious Is the P0410 Fault Code

Most drivers don’t notice anything other than the check engine lights coming on. On certain vehicles, acceleration may cause a slight engine vibration. P0410 is directly connected with the emission control systems. This code must be resolved before the vehicle’s exhaust emissions test fails.
