What is P0460 fault code? What is Fuel Level Sensor Circuit Malfunction and what does it mean? How do I fix the P0460 fault code What are the causes and symptoms of the P0460 error code?

What is the P0460 fault code? What does it all mean?

The PCM is informed in terms voltage about the amount of fuel in a vehicle’s tank. If the voltage signal from a fuel level sensor (FLS), is not equal to the actual fuel level, a code P0460 will be generated. This code can be used even if the voltage signals sent to the computer are not within the factory’s set parameters.

The fuel level sensor can be found above the fuel tank. This sensor is used for monitoring the fuel level within the vehicle’s tank. The main components of the sensor are float, resistor, and actuator.

A float is an oval piece of hollow plastic (or foam), that can be kept on the liquid’s surface. The drive arm is a rod made of metal that connects the float to the resistor. The float changes with the fuel level and activates the drive arm, which is a component that looks like a wiper. This causes the resistance to change, and allows the fuel level to become measured. The PCM uses data from the fuel level sensor as input to determine the amount of fuel in the tank, monitor fuel consumption and track fuel economy.

The P0460 fault code can affect vehicles of all makes and models, including Ford, Mazda, BMW, Mercedes Benz (especially Focus), Mercedes Benz, Chrysler.

What causes the P0460 Fault code?

Here are some reasons why P0460 should be set.

  • – Fuel pump failure (the sensor is often integrated into the pump).
  • – Defective fuel level sensor
  • – An internal fault in the fuel level sensor sensing lever
  • – Fuel level sensor wires open or short circuit
  • – Defective PCM (rarely)

What are the symptoms of the P0460 fault code?

Some symptoms are common when a fault code has been set. Fault code P0460 may indicate that the fuel level gauge is not reading correctly.

  • – Illumination at the check engine lights
  • – Faulty fuel level gauge
  • – The fuel warning light is on
  • Trip computer may not calculate correctly

How do I fix the P0460 fault code?

  • – Inspecting the electrical circuits connected to the fuel sensor
  • – Replace frayed, bent, or broken wires and connectors from the fuel sensor
  • – Check the fuel level sensor. Replace it if necessary.
  • – Repair any mechanical problems in the fuel pump
  • If everything is fine, inspect the fuel tank and PCM for any damage.

How Serious Is the P0460 Fault Code

If another fault code with code P0460 is entered, the vehicle’s drivability is not affected. The fuel level in your tank may not be accurately measured, so you could end up stranded.
