What is the P0461 fault code? What does it all mean?
The fuel level sensor measures how much fuel is in the tank. It sends this information to both the instrument cluster as well as the computer that controls the engine. Some sensors can be used as standalone units, while others are integrated into the fuel pumps. In this case, the fuel pump may need to be replaced. If the fuel sensor signal has gone wrong, the code P0461 is triggered by either the engine control module (ECM), or the powertrain control module(PCM).
Most fuel level sensors can be found on the top of the fuel tanks. The sensor converts the fuel level inside the tank into an electric signal that is sent to the PCM. The sensor information is used by PCM to monitor the fuel level in the tank, monitor fuel use, and ensure optimal fuel consumption and engine performance.
The PCM monitors the voltage signal from the fuel level sensor when the driver turns the ignition key. The P0461 fault code will be set if the voltage falls outside of the manufacturer’s range or if the voltage signal is not consistent with the fuel level sensor.
P0461 fault codes can be found on many vehicle models, including those of Chevrolet, Dodge Volkswagen, Audi and Citroen.
What causes the P0461 Fault code?
Below are some reasons to set fault code P0461:
- – Fuel pump failure (with integrated level sensor).
- – Defective fuel tank level sensor
- – Short or open circuit in the wires and connectors that connect to the fuel level sensor
- – Defective instrument panel
- – Fuel tank damage that stops the float, and the sensor from working properly
- – Defective PCM (rarely)
NOTE: Due to high sulfur fuel, some Ford vehicles may have a thin layer of residue on the resistor. This causes code P0461 to be set, which prevents contact between the resistor & the live link. This deposit can be removed with fuel additives, but it is best to replace fuel level sensor unit.
What are the symptoms of P0461 Malfunction Code?
You may experience the following symptoms if your vehicle has the code P0461:

- – Faulty fuel level gauges that fluctuate
- Low fuel warning light is on
- Trip computer might not be able calculate correctly
How to Fix the P0461 Fault Code
It is a common mistake to repair code P0461 without first diagnosing the problem. It can lead to expensive repairs that do not address the root problem.
The following repairs may be able to resolve the P0461 fault codes:
- – Inspecting the electrical circuits connected to the fuel sensor
- – Replace frayed, bent, or broken wires and connectors from the fuel sensor
- – Check the fuel level sensor. Replace it if necessary.
- – Repair any mechanical faults with the fuel pump
- – Replacing fuel level gauge
- – Inspect the fuel tank and PCM if all seems well.
Sometimes, code P0461 may be caused by corrosion of the fuel tank groundwire. This corrosion can be fixed by cleaning the fuel tank ground wire. To be sure, however, this is not the problem.
How serious is the P0461 Fault code?
Although code P0461 is not likely to cause any driving issues, it is important that it be diagnosed and fixed as soon as possible. A fuel gauge will not tell you how much fuel your car has left. If you don’t refill your tank daily, you could run out gas and be unable to continue driving.
