What is the P0470 Fault code? What does it all mean?

A P0470 error code is an indication that the sensor that monitors exhaust pressure is not operating properly. The powertrain controller module (PCM), detected an inconsistency of the voltage signal coming from the sensor.

Exhaust backpressure sensors may be used in some petrol engines, but they are more common in turbo diesel engines because they play an essential role in emission control. The exhaust pressure sensor’s job is to measure back pressure in the exhaust system, and then report it to the PCM. Particularly in diesel applications, the exhaust back pressure is directly proportional to the amount particulate matter (soot), retained at the DPF (Diesel Particulate Film).

Excessive soot buildup in the DPF can cause the exhaust system to clog and prevent the flow of exhaust gasses. The PCM interprets exhaust back pressure to indicate how clogged DPF is. Based on the input data from the sensor it detects that DPF is blocked and injects fuel or chemical into the exhaust system to raise the exhaust gas temperature. This process is known as “regeneration” Burn the exhaust.

The PCM supplies the exhaust back pressure sensor with a reference voltage 5 volts. The electrical resistance of this sensing element changes as the exhaust pressure changes. These changes are converted to an electrical signal that is transmitted to the PCM. The PCM interprets fluctuations in the voltage signal as changes of exhaust pressure.

In some cases, the input data from exhaust back pressure sensors can also be used by PCM to monitor/control operation of EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation), turbocharger boost pressure. These systems can only function properly if the exhaust backpressure sensor provides accurate and reliable data.

The PCM compares input manifold pressure and ambient air pressure by comparing the voltage signal from exhaust back pressure sensor. If the voltage signal of the sensor doesn’t match the other sensors it will indicate a fault and assign fault code P0470.

P0470 fault codes can be found on vehicles made by Ford, Renault and Nissan as well as Dodge, Honda, Jeep, Mercedes-Benz and Nissan.

What is the P0470 Fault Code?

The following are the most frequent causes of the P0470 fault code:

  • – Defective exhaust Pressure Sensor
  • – Damaged, frayed or fused wires to sensor, loose and/or rusty connections, open or brief circuit problems
  • – Interruption between the PCM signal and the exhaust pressure sensor signal due to an open circuit
  • – A blockage in the pipe connecting the exhaust manifold and the pressure sensor
  • – Leakage of air in the EVAP (exhaust gas recirculation) system
  • – The PCM is broken or needs to be updated

What are the symptoms of P0470 Malfunction code?

These symptoms may be present in vehicles with code P0470.

  • – Illumination for the check engine light
  • Low engine performance
  • – You can adjust fault codes for exhaust and turbocharger systems
  • – Unable to perform the regeneration process manually
  • – Do not attempt to start the engine (unless you are able to perform a regeneration).

How to Fix the P0470 Fault Code

There are several repairs that can resolve the P0470 fault code.

  • – Test and, if needed, replace the exhaust pressure sensor
  • Repair or replacement of damaged wires or connectors to the sensor that causes an open/short circuit
  • – Examining and repairing damaged cables.
  • – Cleanse the exhaust pipes that are blocked
  • – Repairs of components that cause air leakage
  • – Reprogramming or replacement of a faulty PCM

  • Locate the exhaust pressure sensor. Then disconnect the pipe connecting the sensor to the intake manifold. Inspect the exhaust pressure sensor for any carbon buildup. You might see water coming out of the code.
  • You should inspect cables and connectors for burnt spots, rubbing against other parts, or if they are too long. You should also inspect the connector terminals to ensure they are free from corrosion. Replace these components if there is a problem.
  • Ensure the pipe connecting the turbocharger with the intake manifold does not leak. You can correct any broken links and then delete the code.
  • – If the code does not return, check the circuits and the sensor. Disconnect the wires from the exhaust pressure sensor. Then, use a DVOM (Digital Volt Ohm Meter) to check the power circuit for 5 volts. Repair the wiring connecting the PCM and sensor if the sensor is reading 12 volts.
  • – Replace the exhaust pressure sensor if all else fails.

How serious is the P0470 Fault code?

The engine may not be performing as it should if you continue to drive the vehicle bearing the P0470 fault codes. Rarely, the engine might run perfectly and not show any symptoms. The worst scenario is that the vehicle does not start.
