What is the P0493 fault code number? What is Fan Overspeed fault and what does it mean? How do I fix the P0493 fault code What are the causes and symptoms of the P0493 error code?

What is the P0493 Fault code? What does it all mean?

If the powertrain control module (PCM), detects that the electric radiator cooling fans are running too fast or slow, a code P0493 will be generated.

The radiator cooling fan’s job is to maintain the engine coolant at a constant temperature and prevent it from overheating. If the car is moving fast enough, the coolant flows through the radiator cores. The radiator cools down when the fan comes into play, whether it is at high speeds, stop/start traffic or idle. Some fans can move using a V-belt. Others are connected to the battery so they can work with electricity.

Multiple sensors provide information to the PCM that allows it to regulate and monitor the engine’s temperature. When the engine temperature rises (in heavy congestion, idling), the PCM turns the fan on and off while driving on the highway. If the cooling fan turns faster or slower than specified by the manufacturer, the fault code P0493 is set.

P0493 fault codes are found in vehicles including, but not limited, to various models of Peugeot and Citroen as well as Nissan, Peugeot, Citroen and Toyota.

What causes the P0493 Fault code?

These are the most common reasons that P0493 codes are triggered:

  • – Defective electric radiator cooling fan motor
  • – Defective electric radiator cooling fan relay
  • – Bad wires and connectors to the cooling fan
  • – Defective engine coolant temperature sensor
  • – Blown electrical fan fuse

What are the symptoms for P0493 fault code?

You may experience the following symptoms if your vehicle has the code P0493:

  • – Illumination at the check engine lights
  • – The engine temperature will drop if the cooling fan is too fast.
  • – The engine temperature will rise if the cooling fan isn’t running or at a low speed.
  • Engine performance could drop
  • Engine noises can be strange
  • – In rare cases, misfires and stalling can occur
  • Fuel consumption could rise

How do I fix the P0493 fault code?

The following repairs may be able to resolve the P0493 fault code:

  • – Replacing electric cooling fan relay
  • – Replace the fuse in the electric cooling fan
  • Repair of damaged cables or electrical connections, connectors
  • Replacing a defective electric cooling fan motor

How serious is the P0493 Fault code?

Driving conditions are not affected by code P0493. The fan’s task is to maintain the engine coolant temperature at the ideal levels and prevent the engine heat from causing overheating. It can also be used in certain applications to cool the air conditioner. The cooling fan can be damaged or malfunctioning, which could cause the engine to overheat and the air conditioner not to work properly.
