What is the fault code P0497? What is the Evaporative Emissions System Low Purge Flow fault? How do you fix the P0497 error code? What are the causes and symptoms of the P0497 error code?

What is the P0497 fault code? What does it all mean?

A P0497 code is an indication of a problem in the Evaporative Emission Control System (EVAP). If the powertrain control module, PCM detects a low flow condition within the EVAP system, a P0497 code will be triggered.

The EVAP system’s job is to capture and return fuel vapors to the engine for reburning. The fuel vapors are stored in a sealed chamber called a canister. It contains a carbon filter until the desired pressure is reached. If favorable conditions exist, the PCM opens the relief valve at or near the canister container. The engine then absorbs the fuel vapors. The EVAP pressure sensor is used by the PCM to monitor EVAP’s efficiency. Fault code P0497 will be set if the pressure in the EVAP system doesn’t drop enough with the relief valve open. This means that the flow rate needed to drain the system is not equal to the current flow rate.

The P0497 fault code can affect vehicles of all makes and models, including but not limited to Honda, Acura (Chevrolet, Hyundai, Cadillac), Renault, Volvo, Citroen BMW, Saturn, Acura, Honda, Acura, Hyundai, Cadillac, Renault, Volvo and Citroen.

What is the P0497 Fault Code?

There are many reasons that can cause the P0497 error code. For a complete diagnosis, ensure that you inspect every component of your EVAP device for signs and symptoms. The following are possible causes of P0497 code:

  • – Unsuitable or defective fuel cap
  • – Defective EVAP pressure sensor
  • – Defective EVAP purge valve / solenoid
  • – Clogged canister
  • – The EVAP solenoid or purge control valve has a short or open loop
  • – Broken, bent or collapsed vacuum lines and hoses

What are the symptoms for P0497 fault code?

You may experience the following symptoms if your vehicle has the code P0497:

  • – Illumination for the check engine light
  • – A slight rise in fuel consumption
  • – Under the hood, vacuum leak sounds
  • – Quality of engine idle speed has been reduced
  • – An increase in emissions values

How do I fix the P0497 fault code?

The following repairs may be able to resolve the P0497 fault code:

  • – Check the fuel tank cap. If it is damaged, it should be replaced.
  • – Removing defective cables and connectors from the system.
  • – Inspecting vacuum lines and the hoses
  • – Repair a damaged or clogged canister
  • – EVAP purge control valve replacement or solenoid replacement
  • – Replacing a faulty EVAP Pressure Sensor

How Serious Is the P0497 Fault Code

While the vehicle will typically start when P0497 was set, it can cause fuel consumption to drop and increase emissions to the atmosphere. It is best to fix the issue immediately.
