What is the P0501 fault number? What is the Vehicle Speed Sensor Range/Performance Failure description? How can I fix P0501 fault? What are the causes and symptoms of the P0501 error code?
What is the P0501 Fault code? What does it all mean?
If the powertrain control module, PCM detects that the voltage signal coming from the vehicle speed sensor is lower or higher than expected, a code P0501 will be set.
Many vehicle systems depend on data from the speed sensor. Many vehicle systems are controlled by data from the speed sensor, such as vehicle performance and engine efficiency. The speed sensor is needed for many vehicle systems to control transmission performance and determine shift points.
VSS sensor uses an electromagnetic sensor and a rotating relay wheel. It can be mounted on the transmission or drivetrain, such the rear differential. The reluctor wheel is usually connected to the output shaft of the gearbox and rotates with it. As the impeller turns, the grooves between gears create a magnetic force and alter the voltage of the sensor. These voltage changes enable the PCM to determine the vehicle’s speed. If there is a discrepancy in the voltage signal from vehicle speed and the voltage signal from the VSS, code P0501 can be triggered.
Note: Some vehicles have wheel speed sensors in place of the VSS sensor. The P0501 fault code can affect various vehicles, including Honda, Saab Land Rover, Range Rover and Audi.
What causes the P0501 Fault code?
VSS sensors may have different settings. Depending on how VSS works, the reasons could be different. These are the most common reasons that P0501 is triggered
- – Defective vehicle speed sensor
- – VSS connectors or wires are damaged, corroded or shorted
- – A damaged speed sensor reluctor wheel
- If there is excess metal buildup at the magnet tip of the sensor, the signal may become distorted.
- – Poor electrical connections
- – The PCM may not correctly define the vehicle’s tires.
- – PCM or other module problems
What are the symptoms for the P0501 fault code?
These symptoms may be present in vehicles with code P0501.
- – Illumination at the check engine lights
- Depending on the VSS signal output, gear changes could be delayed or made too soon.
- – The speedometer will not function correctly when compared with vehicle speed
- The gearbox’s uneven gear shifting will result in a reduction in engine performance.
- – ABS and traction control systems could be malfunctioning or may not work properly. These systems’ fault lights may be displayed on the instrument panel.
How do I fix the P0501 fault code?
The following repairs may be able to resolve the P0501 fault code:
- – Clear all codes and have them road tested to determine if they will return.
- – All wires and connectors should be checked if the code is returned. Broken or damaged cables and loose connections should be replaced.
- A multimeter is required to verify the speed sensor voltage.
- If it is damaged, the speed sensor reluctor wheel must be replaced.
- – Clean the speed sensor of any dirt, metal or other debris.
- If the problem persists, replace the speed sensor.
How serious is the P0501 Fault code?
The P0501 error code means that the VSS isn’t working properly. Driving with this code for too long can result in erratic gear changes or transmission damage. Additionally, safety systems such ABS and the Traction Control System may be disabled. You should drive the vehicle with extreme caution, especially in adverse weather conditions.
