What is the P0507 fault code and why does it matter? Is the Idle Control System’s RPM Higher Than Expected fault explained? How do I fix the P0507 fault? What are the symptoms and causes for the P0507 fault code

What is the P0507 fault code?

P0507 refers to an OBD2 general malfunction code. This code is similar to P0505 or P0506.

The P0507 code means that the idle control system is operating at a higher than expected RPM. ECU operates within a specific speed range. The manufacturer pre-programmes this speed range. The manufacturer will trigger the P0507 fault code if the idle speed exceeds 200 RPM for a specified period. This code triggers the ECU to put the vehicle into safe mode. The dashboard lights up with a check engine light.

Let’s go deeper ….

The ECU controls the Idle Speed Control Valve, (ISC) on many older vehicles. The ISC (or Idle Air Control) valve is also known. This valve regulates airflow to an engine. This valve regulates the engine’s idle speed. Lower RPM is achieved by closing the valve.

The ECU measures the engine speed via the crankshaft position sensors, and determines the idle speed when the throttle is closed. To regulate idle speed, the ECU also relies on data from other sensors like the AC pressure switch and coolant sensor.

New vehicles are equipped with an Electronic Throttle Control System (ETC), which replaces ISC and IAC valves. The mechanical throttle linkage is removed from the ETC system. The ETC system’s control module (ECU), instead, uses an electric motor to drive its throttle body. To control throttle operation, the ECU examines first the throttle position sensor(TP) and accelerator pedal position sensor(APP).

As explained previously, code P0507 will activate if the idle speed is higher than the preset value over a set period. The vehicle’s standard RPM varies depending on make and model. However, the ideal idle speed for most engines is between 600 to 800 RPM.

The engine will not stall if it is kept at the right idle speed. This helps reduce exhaust emissions.

What are the Possible Causes for the P0507 Fault code?

A P0507 code is most often caused by a vacuum leak in the engine. This is not a problem with idle speed control. In most cases, even though the IAC valve is closed, the code will still be activated. It simply means that the engine is trying to reduce idle speed through a vacuum leak.

  • – Intake air leaks
  • – Broken or loose cables
  • – Air intake system problems
  • – IAC / ISC sensor defective or clogged
  • – Carbon buildup on the throttle body.
  • – Defective power steering tension switch
  • – ETC engine problems
  • – Defective alternator
  • – Restricted exhaust
  • Problems with Positive Crankcase Ventilation system (PCV).

What are the symptoms of P0507 Malfunction Code?

  • – Illumination and control of the check engine light
  • – High engine idle
  • – Idle fluctuation
  • – The vehicle must be hard worked
  • Engine stalling

How do I fix the P0507 fault code?

  • – Cleanse the throttle body
  • – Cleaning and replacing the idle air valve
  • Vacuum lines should always be checked for damage or holes.
  • – Repair of charging system
  • – Replacing power steering pressure switch

How serious is the P0507 Fault code?

Although this fault code does not prohibit you from driving, you might experience issues such as engine stalling and high idle speed. To avoid costly repairs and engine damage, you need to fix the problem as soon as possible.
