What is the P0513 Fault code? What does it all mean?

Fault code 0513 is a general code that can be used to identify faults. “Wrong Immobilizer Key” If the vehicle’s anti theft/security system is unable to recognize the key, it will be set.

While each app has its own anti-theft mechanism, the majority of systems share certain common features. Nearly all applications require that multiple control modules interact with one another and the switch to activate the fuel injection or ignition systems.

The key must be recognized by the body control module, powertrain interface module and powertrain control module. This means that all modules must be capable of decoding the key’s encrypted security code. But this is only one stage of the security systems. The second stage requires that all modules interact with one another via the Controller Area Network bus in order to verify that they are aware of each other.

Once all matches have been made, the PCM will activate fuel injection and ignition, allowing the vehicle’s to start. A safety warning light will flash and code P0513 will go off.

The P0513 fault code can affect vehicles of all makes and models, including but not limited to Dodge, Chevrolet, Volkswagen or Chrysler.

What is the P0513 Fault Code and Why Does It Happen?

Here are some reasons why P0513 should be set.

  • – Low or dead key battery
  • – Immobilizer key that is defective or incorrectly programmed
  • – An immobilizer is unable to detect the signal due to a poor electrical connection
  • – Corroded, damaged, burned, disconnected, or disconnected wiring and/or connectors
  • – An antenna defect causing an interruption in transponder signal
  • – Defective immobilizer control unit
  • – Defective contact cylinder
  • – Rarely, a defective PCM or programming error

What Are the Signs and Symptoms of the P0513 Fault Code

You may experience the following symptoms if your vehicle has the code P0513:

  • – Illumination at the check engine lights
  • Flashing security light at instrument panel
  • – The engine could not start at any time
  • – Sometimes the engine will start but stop after running for more than two to three seconds.
  • – In some cases, the maximum number of attempts to start the vehicle using an unrecognized key may exceed the limit. The entire electrical system could be shut off.
  • This code may be accompanied by the codes for PCM power circuit or ignition system fault codes

How do I fix the P0513 fault code?

When diagnosing this code, the most common error is to look for faults in the fuel or ignition system. Sometimes it may start but not start in some cases. This could lead to your mechanic being incorrect.

There are several repairs that can resolve the P0513 fault code.

  • – Key battery and battery related issues
  • Repair or replace damaged, corroded, or shorted components, cables, and connectors
  • – Reprogramming or replacing the immobilizer key
  • – Replacing the immobilizer antenna or repairing it
  • – Replacing the defective contact tube
  • – Replacing/reprogramming the PCM

How serious is the P0513 Fault code?

Fault code P0513 should not be considered serious. Sometimes, the vehicle may not start properly. In more advanced cases, the vehicle might not start at all. A car that isn’t working can make it difficult to commute, pick up children from school, go shopping, and many other activities impossible. This is why it is important to resolve the issue as soon as possible.
