What is the P0517 fault code What is the description for the Battery Temperature Sensor Circuit High fault code? How can I fix P0517 fault code What are the symptoms and causes for the P0517 fault code

What is the P0517 Fault code? What does it all mean?

A code P0517 means that the circuit of the battery temperature sensor is malfunctioning. The battery temperature sensor is normally mounted on the tray beneath the battery. It measures the temperature of the battery to transmit the data to the powertrain control module. This signal is used by the PCM to determine how much to charge based on battery temperature. To determine if the ignition key is turned on, the PCM also monitors the voltage signal from the sensor.

Temperature is directly proportional to voltage. The temperature is inversely proportional to the voltage signal. A high voltage signal means that the battery has a cold temperature. The PCM sends a 5V reference signal to the sensor. It is grounded via the sensor return line. The temperature of the battery will increase, which causes the resistance of your sensor to decrease and the voltage signal that is sent to it to increase.

If the PCM detects voltage signals from the battery temperature sensor, higher than those set by the manufacturer, P0517 will be activated.

The P0517 fault code can affect vehicles of all makes and models, including but not limited to Toyota, Dodge, Ford Lexus, Lexus, Honda Lexus, Lexus, Subaru, Lexus or Chrysler.

What causes the P0517 Fault code?

Below are some reasons to set fault code P0517:

  • – Battery temperature sensor failure
  • – Connectors or wires that are damaged, burned, shorted, disconnected, corroded, or otherwise not in good condition to the sensor.
  • – Poor electrical connection for battery temperature sensor circuit
  • – Corrosion of battery terminals
  • – Engine overheating
  • – Defective PCM (rarely)

What are the Signs and Symptoms of Malfunction Code P0517?

These symptoms may be present in vehicles with code P0517.

  • – Illumination for the check engine light
  • – On instrument panel, battery charge lamp
  • Low battery charge
  • – Idling fluctuations in engine speed

How do I fix the P0517 fault code?

You will need to replace your battery temperature sensor if your vehicle is code P0517. To make sure you are certain, test the resistance of the temperature sensor and compare your findings to the manufacturer’s specifications. If your data is not consistent with the manufacturer’s specifications, the sensor should be replaced. It is easy to make the common mistake of thinking the battery is defective and not testing it first before replacing it.

There are several repairs that can resolve the P0517 fault code:

  • – Replace or repair damaged, corroded, shorted, or disconnected wires, connectors, or components to the sensor circuit.
  • – Replacing the bad battery temperature sensor
  • – Cleaning the battery terminals
  • – Replacement of the oxidized batteries
  • – Reprogramming or replacement for a defective PCM
