What is P0622 fault code and what does it mean? What is the definition of Generator Field “F” Control Circuit Malfunction? How do you fix P0622 fault codes? What are the symptoms and causes for the P0622 fault code

What is the P0622 fault code? What does it signify?

P0622 is the Malfunction Code. “Generator Area “F” control circuit malfunction . This means that the powertrain controller module (PCM), has detected an issue in the alternator control system.

The alternator’s job is to charge the battery, generate power for the vehicle’s electric system, and do so as long as the engine runs. The alternator lasts between 150 and 200 thousand kilometers. It can last for as long as that. This mileage is too high and it can malfunction. The alternator is constantly checked by the PCM to ensure it is operating properly. Code P0622 is triggered by a faulty voltage signal coming from the alternator’s field coil control circuit.

The field coil is located around the armature of most alternators. This coil is crucial in charging the battery and starting the alternator. The PCM continuously checks the alternator field controller circuit each time the engine starts.

The PCM self-diagnoses multiple times every time you turn on the ignition key. In addition to self-tests and comparing signals from various control module, the PCM uses CAN (Controller Area Network) to do so. Modules may not communicate properly with each other, preventing them from sharing important information between the parts that they control.

If the PCM detects an alternator field control circuit problem, it will record code P0622. The malfunction indicator light will turn on if the problem persists or becomes very serious.

P0622 fault codes can be found on many vehicles, including Dodge, Jeep and Ford models.

What causes the P0622 Fault code?

These are the most common reasons that P0622 fault codes are triggered:

  • – Defective alternator
  • – Shorted, damaged, burnedt, disconnected, corroded or disconnected wires and/or connectors including battery terminals
  • – Alternator harness, open or shorted
  • A faulty electrical connection can cause an alternator circuit to fail
  • – Defective battery
  • – Broken relays and blown fuse
  • – PCM has accidentally set the code in error
  • – Defective PCM

What are the symptoms for P0622 Malfunction Codes?

You may experience the following symptoms if your vehicle has the code P0622:

  • Illumination of the check engine light
  • – Lighting of the charge warn lamp on the instrument panel
  • A dead battery can cause the vehicle to not start or run well.
  • – Loss in power during acceleration
  • – Increased fuel use
  • – Engine shaking and/or stalling
  • – Unusual engine sounds at idle
  • – Difficulty with gear changes
  • – Setting related fault codes

The vehicle may stop functioning if it is being driven at fault time. The engine may stall if the battery is at a critical low level.

How to Fix the P0622 Fault Code

The following repairs may be able to resolve the P0622 fault code:

  • Ensure that the battery is fully charged. If the battery’s charge is low, charge it to the correct level and then test the alternator. Refer to the specifications of the manufacturer for the minimum and maximum voltage output requirements. If the voltage output requirements are not equal, it could be that the alternator hasn’t been charging properly.
  • Using the wiring diagram and a DVOM, check for voltage in the alternator field controller circuit. If the voltage is not present, inspect the condition of the relays and fuses in the system and replace any that are defective. With the circuit fully loaded, fuse tests should be conducted. Alternator faults are indicated by voltage at the coil’s control terminal.
  • – Inspect the wiring of the controller. Verify the ground connection between engine and chassis.
  • The controller should be checked for water, heat, or physical shock. If the controller is leaking, it may need to be replaced.

There are many other routes a mechanic could take depending on the module that is reporting the problem.

How serious is the Fault Code P0622?

When you consider the effect on driving ability, this problem can be very serious. The vehicle’s capabilities may be severely limited. A CAN-related fault could cause more problems with the vehicle’s electrical functions.
