The malfunction indicator lamp, also known by the malfunction indicator, is used to alert the driver when there is a problem with the vehicle. It is possible that the driver does not know about the problems that may occur when the malfunction indicator lamp stops working. When the Engine Control Module (ECM/PCM/ECU detects a malfunction within the control circuit of the malfunction indicator lamp, a code P0650 will be triggered.

A 12 volt fuse powers the check engine light and all other indicators lights. A ground circuit is also connected to the primary computer of the vehicle. Ground circuit keeps the ECM/PCM’s light on. The fault code P0650 is used to indicate a problem with either the ground circuit or 12 volt power cables. The ECM will record the code P0650 if the bulb does not light up or blows.

Note: Once the ignition key has been turned, the vehicle will conduct a self test. All fault lights will turn on for three seconds, then go off. There is a problem if the check engine light doesn’t come on during this test.
