What is the fault code P0673? What is the Cylinder 3-Glow Plug Circuit/Open Malfunction description? How do I fix the P0673 fault code What are the causes and symptoms of the P0673 error code?

What is the P0673 Fault code? What does it signify?

When the engine is cold, compressed air temperature quickly loses its heat. This problem is solved by a glow plug (preheating element). The glow plugs are usually mounted through the cylinder heads as close to the combustion chambers as possible.

The powertrain control module (PCM) controls glow plugs. It monitors coolant and oil temperatures, transmission temperature, and intake air temperature. If the PCM senses cold engine, the PCM will activate the glow plug to help with starting. Code P0673 is triggered if the PCM detects the glow plug not heating up. This code usually indicates a problem with the electrical circuit.

When the engine is hot, however, glow plugs will not be required. The PCM turns off the glow plug control system when coolant temperature exceeds a threshold to prevent engine damage.

What causes the P0673 Fault code?

These are the most common reasons that P0673 is triggered:

  • – Defective glowing plug (Cylinder 3-3)
  • Defective timer or control module for glow plug control
  • – In the glow plug circuit, damaged, defective, corroded wires, harnesses or associated connectors
  • – A defective glow plug relay
  • – Blown Fuses

What are the symptoms for P0673’s Fault Code?

You may experience the following symptoms if your vehicle has the code P0673:

  • – Illumination at the check engine lights
  • – Waiting too long before the engine starts
  • In cold weather, the engine might not start at all
  • – The Preheat light doesn’t turn on or stay on constantly
  • – When the vehicle is starting, white smoke comes from the exhaust
  • – It is possible that the vehicle’s power may be reduced
  • – Unusually loud noises from the engine
  • Engine misfire

How do I fix the P0673 fault code?

Diagnose this code first if you find a P0670(Glow Plug Control Module Circuit Malfunction code) along with the code.

There are several repairs that can resolve the P0673 fault code.

  • – Repair and replacement of damaged, corroded fused wires or loose connectors
  • – Repair and replacement of bent or damaged pins for electrical connectors
  • Repairing short or open circuit problems and replacing blown fuse
  • – Replacing defective glow plugs in cylinder 3
  • – Replacing a faulty glowing plug relay
  • – Replacing a defective glow plug control module, or timer
  • Clear all codes and test the vehicle. Recheck the PCM to verify that no codes have been reset.

How serious is the P0673 Fault code?

The P0673 code is not likely to prevent a vehicle’s starting. The engine can still run if only one spark plug has failed. The engine will start more difficult in colder weather, as the temperature changes and time passes. This can result in a loss in power and acceleration.
