What is the P0690 fault codes? What is the description for the ECM/PCM Power Relay Sense Circuit high error code? How do I fix the P0690 fault code What are the causes and symptoms of the P0690 fault codes?

What is the P0690? What is the Fault Code? What does it mean?

Common code P0690 refers to problems with output circuits, internal computer malfunctions and other issues. A code P0690 can be generated if either the engine control module or powertrain control modules (PCM), detects a high level of voltage in the relay’s sensing section.

The PCM power relay can safely transmit battery voltage to the ECM/PCM circuits. This is a contact type relay, activated via a cable from an ignition switch. This relay typically has five wires.

Relay’s working structure is simple. The powertrain relay is usually set to the on position, and the battery voltage flows to the relay continuously. When the ignition switch turns to the off position, the relay is activated. “ON” when the position is reached, the small coil within the relay is energized and the electromagnet causes two contacts to close. This completes circuit and sends electrical current from battery to PCM through a fused.

This code can only be used in vehicles that use relays for power and ground signals to ECM/PCM. Some applications use a fused system instead of a power-relay.

The P0690 fault code can affect vehicles of all makes and models, including but not limited to: Chevrolet, Cadillacs, Peugeot, GMCs, Ford, Mercury Toyota, Opel, Dodge Jeep, Audi, Chrysler, and Volkswagen.

What is the P0690 Fault Code?

Here are some reasons why P0690 should be set.

  • – Power relay for defective ECM/PCM
  • – Corroded, burnt or shorted wires and/or connections, including battery terminals
  • – Short circuit connections of power relay and ECM/PCM
  • – Melted fuse links or blown ECM/PCM fuse
  • – Dead or defective battery
  • – Defective ECM/PCM (rarely)

What are the symptoms for P0690 Fault Code

These symptoms may be present in vehicles with code P0690.

  • – Illumination for check engine light
  • – The engine might not start if there is no starting condition.
  • Starts, but the engine may not start
  • – The engine can be stopped immediately after it has started
  • You may have to return the accessory.
  • The engine can show a number of drivability problems.
  • – To limit engine power, the ECM/PCM may enter fail-safe mode

How do I fix the P0690 fault code?

Because this code concerns electrical components, don’t rush to make a choice and try to replace the ECM/PCM immediately. This can be a costly repair and often the only option to resolve the problem. This fault code is typically caused by corroded or loose connections to the relay. These cables should be checked immediately.

There are several repairs that can resolve the P0690 fault code.

  • – Repair of broken or loose battery cables
  • – If your battery is either dead or defective, you can replace it.
  • – Replacing blown, blown fuse
  • Repair of short circuits caused by faulty wiring or terminals
  • – Replacing an ECM/PCM relay that is damaged or defective
  • – Replace the fuse box if it is damaged, melted or burned out.
  • – Reprogramming and replacement of the faulty ECM/PCM (rarely).

How serious is the P0690 Fault code?

Even if your vehicle is starting with a P0690 fault codes, it can still stop at any moment. This code can affect all security components. You may experience your headlights suddenly go out, the lights on your instrument panel disappear, and the ABS and traction control may be disabled. This code must be resolved immediately to avoid any damage or accidents.
