What is P0708 fault code and how can it be fixed? How can you fix the P0708 fault? What are the symptoms and causes for the P0708 fault?

What is the P0708 Fault code? What does it mean

If the powertrain control module (PCM/ECM/ECU) detects a voltage from the transmission range sensor (also known by the transmission sensor or transmission sensor), that is higher than a predetermined threshold, a code P0708 will be generated.

The job of the transmission position sensor is to notify the TCM (Transmission control Module) or PCM about which gear was selected. A functioning sensor includes a safety switch which allows the engine’s start when the gear is in “N/Neutral”. The PCM/TCM can’t effectively manage the engine or transmission if the switch or sensor is defective. The PCM/TCM can detect abnormal voltages in the transmission position sensor circuits and put the vehicle into failsafe mode or safe mode in order to prevent transmission damage. This code will not normally illuminate the check engine lamp, but it could cause the overdrive (O/D), or D4 lights to flash.

What causes the P0708 Fault code?

Here are some reasons why P0708 should be set.

  • – Defective transmission position sensor
  • – Open or close circuit in the wiring harness
  • – A defective or incorrectly set Neutral / Park switch
  • Poor electrical connections
  • – Defective PCM / TCM

Note: An open circuit means that the electrical current coming to the sensor can not form a complete circle. This could be like a lightbulb’s filament being broken. A short circuit is when the negative cable touches the positive cable.

What are the symptoms of the P0708 Malfunction code?

You may experience the following symptoms if your vehicle has the code P0708.

  • – Turn on the engine light (seen on certain vehicles)
  • – Incorrect gear shifts
  • Vehicle not starting
  • – The ability to shift into gear and start the engine, which could cause an abrupt start
  • – An increase in fuel consumption
  • – You can prevent the vehicle from changing gears by entering the safe mode (“Limp Mode”)

How to Fix the P0708 Fault Code

  • – Replacing a defective transmission position sensor
  • – Replace or repair an open or short circuit within the wiring harness
  • – Repair of or replacement of the faulty or inoperable Park/Neutral switch
  • Repair or replacement if the wiring is faulty or there are loose connectors

How Serious Is the P0708 Fault Coding?

The vehicle may not start if the P0708 fault code is entered. This happens because the ECU thinks the vehicle has been in the wrong gear. In certain cases, the vehicle might not start but shift correctly. This code should be fixed as soon as possible in order to prevent damage to other components.
