What is P0709 fault code? What is Transmission Range sensor A circuit intermittent failure? How can you fix P0709 fault code What are the causes and symptoms of P0709 fault code?

What is the P0709 fault code? What does it signify?

While P0709 is described differently depending on the make and type, the code generally indicates that either the transmission control module, or the powertrain controller module (PCM), has detected an issue with the shift mechanism.

TCM, also known as the transmission location sensor or transmission position sensors, is used by the PCM to determine which gear the vehicle operates in. The PCM continuously sends voltage through the sensor to determine which gear the vehicle’s in. This is done thanks to the turn signal. The malfunction code P0709 will be activated if there is no signal to the sensor or the signal is intermittent.

What causes the P0709 Fault code?

Incorrectly setting the transmission position sensor is the most common reason for this problem. The sensor could not be correctly set if the transmission has been serviced. The following are possible causes:

  • – Incorrectly or defectively adjusted transmission position sensor
  • – Short or open circuit in the wiring harness
  • – A defective or incorrectly set Neutral / Park switch
  • – Poor electrical connections
  • – Defective PCM / TCM

Note: An open circuit is when the electrical voltage from the sensor does not form a complete cycle. This could be like a lightbulb’s filament being broken. A short circuit is when the negative cable touches the positive cable.

What are the symptoms of P0709 Malfunction code?

You may experience the following symptoms if your vehicle has the code P0709.

  • – Illumination for the check engine light
  • – Incorrect gear shifts
  • – Unable to change gears
  • – Increased fuel consumption
  • You can disable the vehicle from shifting gears by using the safe mode (Limp Mod)

How do I fix the P0709 fault code?

The transmission range sensor receives 12 volts from the ignition switch. It then sends 12 volts to the PCM/TCM using the appropriate circuit based upon gear position. If there is no signal to the PCM/TCM (or if it’s intermittent), P0709 will be set. Cable problems are the most common reason why intermittent signals occur. This is where the transmission range sensor connector and harness should be checked first.

  • – The transmission range sensor wiring and connectors must be repaired or replaced
  • – Transmission range sensor must have recalibrated (highest probabilities).
  • – All PCM cables and connectors must be changed
  • Repair or replacement of damaged or defective Park/Neutral position switches
  • – Replacing a defective transmission position sensor

How serious is the P0709 fault code?

The P0709 error code is very serious as the control module is unable to determine which gear the transmission’s in. The transmission’s internal components can be damaged if the vehicle is put into safe mode. Transmission problems should be addressed immediately to avoid further damage. After the transmission is repaired, you should not drive the vehicle.
