What is the P0710 fault code? What does it signify?
The code P0710 refers to voltage problems in the transmission temperature (TFT), sensor circuit in automatic transmission vehicles. If the powertrain (PCM/ECM/ECU/ECU) or the transmission control module (TCM), detects that the voltage signal coming from the transmission fluid temperature sensor exceeds the manufacturer’s specifications, a P0710 code will be generated. This indicates that either the transmission has been overheated, or the sensor or circuit is defective.
The transmission oil pan houses the TFT sensor. The TFT sensors receive a reference voltage signal, usually 5 volts from the PCM and produce a voltage signal based upon the transmission fluid temperature. TFT sensors have a negative temperature coefficient (NTC). The temperature has an inverse relationship with the sensor’s internal resistance. The resistance of the TFT sensor drops as the transmission oil temperature increases. Conversely, when the temperature drops, it becomes more resistant.
