What is the P0723 fault code? What does it all mean?
The transmission output shaft speed sensor (OSS) is the code P0723. A P0723 code is triggered when the powertrain controller module (PCM), or transmission control modules (TCM), detects an intermittent voltage signal from OSS sensor. This code will not be activated on vehicles that have automatic transmission.
The transmission output shaft speed sensor’s primary function is to provide data on the shaft rotation speed to the PCM/TCM. The PCM/TCM compares this data with other transmission speed sensors to determine shifting strategies and calculate hydraulic pressure for each gear. It manages the shift solenoids, allowing the transmission to be shifted into the correct gear at the right time. The OSS sensor can also be used to determine vehicle speed in some cases.
In most cases, the OSS sensor consists of a Hall effect sensor mounted in front a relay ring. Depending on the transmission design of the system, the PCM/TCM calculates the signals from the sensor which represent the rotation speed of the output shaft. Other sensors can also be used to provide input data (e.g., the transmission input shaft sensor, the engine speed sensor, and the turbine speed sensor).The PCM/TCM uses input data from other sensors to determine how many signals will arrive at a given time, and then check if the OSS is functioning properly. The transmission will work smoothly if it receives the correct data from the OSS sensors. The PCM/TCM will recognize that the transmission cannot be controlled effectively if the signal is irregular, fluctuating, or inconsistent over a time period and will assign fault code P0723.

What causes the P0723 Fault code?
