What is P0730 fault code and what does it mean? Incorrect Gear / Gear Ratio failure explanation? How can I fix the P0730 fault? What are the causes and symptoms of the P0730 error code?

What is the P0730 fault code? What does it signify?

When the powertrain control module (PCM/ECM), or the transmission control module detects an issue with the transmission’s performance, a code P0730 will be triggered.

The torque converter is located between the engine & transmission in automatic transmission vehicles. This mechanism increases the engine torque and transfers it to the transmission. The torque converter acts as a clutch to prevent the vehicle from stalling. This is especially true when the vehicle has been in position D (or stationary).

The vehicle’s computer, or powertrain control module, controls the automatic transmission that uses planetary gear sets. The PCM uses vehicle speed, engine speeds, throttle position and other information to determine when to shift up/down between gears. To verify that the transmission is working properly, the PCM uses inputs from various sensors.

If the automatic transmission experiences a problem with any of its gear ranges, a code P0730 will be set. However, it does not mean that there is a particular gear ratio malfunction. This code indicates that the PCM detected a greater RPM difference between the input speed and transmission output speed. This code indicates that the transmission is sliding. This could happen if the driver changes gears or drives at constant speed in the same gear.

P0730 is a common issue with brands like Ford, Mercedes Benz. Dodge, Jeep, and Chrysler.

Code P0730 is frequently associated with trouble codes: P0732 and P0733.

What causes the P0730 Fault code?

  • – A mechanical malfunction within the gearbox
  • – Defective shift solenoids
  • – Hydraulic passages are being blocked by dirty transmission oil
  • – Low transmission oil
  • – Worn pump or fluid filter clogging
  • – Defective valve body
  • – Circuit problems like loose connections and damaged wiring
  • – Defective transmission control module
  • Problem with the torque converter clutch
  • – Problems with PCM/TCM, such as software that requires updating
  • – Transmission performance issues due to defective engine sensors (rare).

What are the Symptoms of P0730’s Fault Code?

  • – Illumination at the check engine lights
  • – Incorrect gear shifting or delayed shifting
  • – Increased fuel consumption
  • Vehicle not moving
  • – Some cases may present misfires or stalling problems

How to Fix the P0730 Fault Code

  • First, make sure to check the transmission oil level. It can lead to shifting problems if the transmission oil is too low or dirty. Transmission oil should always be topped-up if it’s low. If it’s old or dirty, it needs to be changed.
  • – Check the wiring and electrical connections connecting the sensors to the transmission controller module.
  • Repair or replace any worn or damaged wiring within and around the transmission controller module.
  • Follow the manufacturer’s instructions to perform a torque converter stall speed test. The transmission sensor values should be matched to the engine speed. The torque converter, or the internal transmission may have an issue causing the engine to stall faster than the factory specifications.
  • – The solenoid is responsible for controlling torque converter clutch, belts and gears. This solenoid usually uses oil pressure. An electrical problem should be reported to the solenoid. Before you continue, rectify the problem.
  • Transmission fluid and wiring should be in good condition. If they are not, it is best to have the components of the transmission checked and repaired or replaced.
  • For proper repair of the components, it is necessary to disassemble the transmission if there are any issues with the pump, shift solenoids, or torque converter.
  • After repairs are made, the gear should be changed and tested. If all is well, the code P0730 will be returned.

How serious is the P0730 Fault code?

It is dependent on the type of application that code P0730 is applied to. Sometimes, the code can be triggered by a minor problem even though the transmission is fine. The transmission may not shift if P0730 is triggered due to a bigger problem. It is possible to include other codes in such cases.

It is best to have fault code P0730 fixed by a certified technician. Most problems resolve themselves after clearing the code.
