What is the P0731 fault code? What does it all mean?
Modern vehicles equipped with automatic transmission/transaxle use a torque converter between engine and transmission to increase engine torque output and drive the rear wheels.
The Engine Control Module, Powertrain Control Module (PCM), and Transmission Control Modules are able to receive input from many sensors in order to ensure that the transmission is operating correctly. The transmission input speed sensor as well as the transmission output speed sensors are two of these sensors.
The data from the output and transmission speed sensors are used to compare data and determine torque converter slippage and gear ratio. The fault code P0731 is set if the powertrain control module detects an inconsistency between the RPM sensors for the first and second gears.
This causes the transmission to miss and the vehicle can’t shift into first. This can happen when the driver changes gears frequently or drives in the same gear at the same speed.
Note: This code is similar in appearance to P0729 and P0730. Repair any other transmission codes first.

- – Reprogramming or replacing the defective TCM
- – Repair damaged cables and connectors in the transmission control circuit
How Serious Is the P0731 Fault Coding?
Fault code P0731 should be addressed immediately, even if the vehicle can still be driven. Transmission malfunctions can occur if the vehicle fails to shift into or from first gear. Transmission leakage may cause shifting issues. If this isn’t addressed, the vehicle could soon experience other problems. If the engine fault lamp is on, the vehicle will go into safe mode.
