What is the P0736 fault code and what does it mean? What is the definition of Reverse Gear Incorrect Gear Ratio Failure? How can you fix P0736 fault code What are the causes and symptoms of the P0736 error code?

What is the P0736 fault code? What does it signify?

If there is an issue with reverse gear in vehicles equipped with an automatic transmission, or if the problem occurs while the vehicle moves in reverse gear, P0736 will be triggered. This code is used when the transmission can’t engage reverse or reverse gear selection is not maintained or the transmission’s actual speed when reverse gear is selected is not the desired or expected speed.

Transmissions with automatic transmissions control the gear changes by either the powertrain controller module (PCM), or the transmission control modules (TCM). While the vehicle is moving forward, the PCM or TCM manages the shift solenoids. The reverse gear selection is not controlled by computers. Hydraulic pressure controls the direction of the transmission’s output. The driver adjusts the transmission’s output through the gear lever.

There are many models of Mitsubishi, Suzuki and BMW that are susceptible to the P0736 fault code.

What causes the P0736 Fault code?

Below are some reasons to set fault code P0736:

  • A defective shift solenoid
  • Low transmission oil
  • Filter and transmission oil that is not clean
  • – Broken or damaged connectors
  • – A problem with the transmission or blockage
  • – Hydraulic control unit failure
  • – Defective transmission pump
  • – Defective torque converter clutch
  • – A defective PCM or transmission control unit (TCM).

What are the symptoms of P0736 Malfunction Code?

These symptoms may be present in vehicles with code P0736.

  • – Illumination for the check engine light
  • Transmission not shifting into reverse/difficult shifting
  • – Transmission stuck in reverse gear
  • Gearbox slip
  • Unexpected engine stop

How to Fix the P0736 Fault Code

Most cases don’t require expensive repairs. Most of the time, all your vehicle requires is to change or top-up its transmission oil. Rarely, the shift solenoid will need to replaced. Rarely, the problem could be the PCM unit, which will need to replaced and reprogrammed.

  • – Topping up transmission oil that is not available
  • – After flushing out the system, change dirty or burned transmission oil
  • – Replacing a defective shift solenoid
  • – Replacing damaged connectors or cables in the transmission control system
  • – Repairing a solenoid harness for a shorted or open shift
  • Repair of clogged transmission cables
  • – Repair or replacement for faulty torque converter or transmission components
  • – Reprogramming or replacement of a faulty TCM or PCM

How serious is the P0736 Fault code?

Other than the check engine warning light, there are no symptoms that can go unnoticed. Only when the vehicle is in reverse can it be a fault. Sometimes reverse gear becomes unusable, or the vehicle may not be able to go into reverse. This isn’t life-threatening but can cause severe damage to your transmission. No matter what the outcome, it is important to address any transmission problem as soon as possible. A vehicle equipped with a defective transmission is not recommended.
