What is P0738 fault code description? What is the TCM Engine Output Circuit Low error codes description? How can I fix P0738 fault codes? What are the symptoms and causes for the P0738 fault code

What is the P0738 fault code? What does it mean?

If the voltage signal received from the circuit or engine speed output sensor is lower than setpoints, a code P0738 will trigger.

To control, regulate and calculate the transmission’s shifting strategies, the PCM/TCM employs a variety sensors and switches. To determine the shift points, it uses an engine speed sensors (ESS). As the name suggests, this sensor calculates the engine’s rotational velocity (RPM). It is sometimes also called the crankshaft position sensor, (CKP), and transmission output shaft speeds sensor (OSS). When the PCM/TCM is notified by the sensor of low voltage, the PCM/TCM sets trouble code P0738.

P0738 fault codes can be found on vehicles made by Toyota, Mazda and Hyundai as well as other models such as Honda, Dodge, Chevrolet and Duramax.

What is the P0738 Fault Code?

These are the most common reasons that P0738 fault codes are triggered:

  • – Defective gearbox output shaft speed sensor
  • – Defective transmission input shaft speed sensor
  • – Defective crankshaft position sensor
  • – Defective output shaft position sensor/ crankshaft speed sensor reluctor wheel
  • – Short circuits can be caused by damaged, melted or corroded wires to the sensors.
  • – Rusty or loose connectors/sockets
  • – Defective shift solenoid(s)
  • – Transmission fluid that is not working properly or is missing
  • – Obstructions to transmission fluid lines
  • – Engine temperature sensor (or other defective sensors)
  • – Low system voltage
  • – The PCM/TCM has a problem or needs to be reprogrammed

What are the symptoms for P0738 fault code?

You may experience the following symptoms if your vehicle has the code P0738:

  • – Illumination at the check engine lights
  • – Requires hard, delayed, and unpredictable shifting
  • Transmission cannot change gears
  • Gearbox slip / slip
  • – Increased fuel use
  • – Faulty speedometer or not working
  • Engine misfires
  • – Engine hesitation during acceleration
  • Engine stalling when the engine is idle or stopped
  • – PCM may enter failsafe mode (limp Mode) to limit engine power

How do I fix the P0738 fault code?

There are several repairs that can resolve the P0738 fault code.

  • – Replacing the defective transmission output shaft speed sensor
  • – Replacing the defective input shaft speed sensor of a transmission
  • – Replacing the defective crankshaft position sensor
  • – Repairing damaged wires and connectors, as well as open or short circuits to sensors
  • – Reluctor wheels need to be checked and replaced if necessary
  • – Replacing a damaged or defective shift solenoid.
  • – Refilling the transmission fluid that is not available
  • – Replacing dirty or contaminated transmission fluid
  • Fluid flow restriction cleaning lines
  • – Measurement and repair of the system voltage
  • – Replacement or reprogramming of the PCM/TCM

How Serious Is the P0738 Fault Coding?

Set fault code (P0738) indicates that there is a serious issue with your vehicle and you should immediately address it. This code can cause engine performance and driveability problems. You may experience symptoms such as misfire, loss of engine power, and incorrect gear changes. This can lead to an increase in costs and magnifying the problem. The problem must be fixed quickly.
