What is the P0746 fault number? What is the explanation for Pressure Control Solenoid “A” Performance / Stuck Closed? How do I fix the P0746 fault code What are the symptoms and causes for the P0746 fault code

What is the P0746 Fault code? What does it signify?

The transmission control module (TCM), or powertrain controller module (PCM), will set a P0746 code if it detects a fault with the transmission solenoid. There may be more than one pressure control solenoid in an automatic transmission. This fault code refers to the solenoid marked “A”.

First, you should know that some automatic transmissions have transmission fluids that don’t need to be changed throughout the lifetime of the transmission. These transmissions don’t have dipsticks to measure oil levels. Only authorized service providers can measure the transmission oil level. To check for fluid conditions or to detect mechanical problems, it is not recommended to remove the transmission pan. It is almost impossible to fill the right amount of transmission fluid. It is possible to cause irreparable damage by over- or underfilling your transmission fluid.

Although manufacturers may have different parameters, automatic transmissions all require pressurized fluid to function properly. A pressure pump is connected to the engine via the torque converter. Proper operation of gearshifts and the torque converter clutch lock is dependent on effective control of the pressurized fluid.

The solenoid that controls the fluid pressure is responsible for ensuring the transmission works properly. Most automatic transmissions have at least three solenoids. They are A, B, or C.

Effective control of the transmission fluid pressure is required for operating conditions like throttle opening, engine speed (or transmission turbine speed), currently selected gear, vehicle speed, and vehicle speed. The PCM determines the required pressure for the transmission to adjust to changing conditions. The PCM is notified by pressure control solenoids that the internal pressure is being measured. The PCM adjusts the transmission gear ratio by controlling the pressure control solenoids. It directs hydraulic fluid to the correct hydraulic circuits at the appropriate time.

Fault code 0746 is issued to any PCM that is unable to control the “A”, pressure control solenoid. The word “stuck” The code describes that the solenoid controlling the transmission oil pressure is stuck inside the “OFF” position. The transmission oil pressure can’t be controlled, directed, or regulated in this situation.

P0746 fault codes can be found on vehicles made by Lexus, Nissan and Honda.

What Are the Possible Causes of P0746 Fault Codes?

Here are some reasons why P0760 should be set.

  • – Damaged and/or corroded connectors and/or cables both inside and out of the transmission
  • – A “A” transmission control solenoid that has become faulty or stuck in “off” mode.
  • – Low or dirty transmission oil
  • – Use unsuitable or incompatible transmission oil
  • – A dirty or clogged transmission filter
  • – Blockage of hydraulic fluid lines
  • – Hydraulic control unit for transmission failure
  • – A clogged or defective transmission pump
  • – Other mechanical defects in the gearbox
  • – Software Update Required for Defective Transmission Control Module (TCM) or PCM.

What are the symptoms of the P0746 Fault Code?

You may experience the following symptoms if your vehicle has the code P0746:

  • – Illumination for the check engine light
  • – The transmission warning light is on
  • Gearbox slip
  • – Transmission stuck at any gear
  • – Incorrect or delayed gear changes
  • – While in gear, the vehicle doesn’t move.
  • – Increased fuel consumption
  • – The gearbox is overheated
  • – Sometimes, misfire-like symptoms may be seen in one or more of the cylinders.
  • – Sometimes the engine will stall when it is decelerated faster than it comes to a complete stop. The torque converter lock-up clutch could be fully engaged.
  • Depending upon the problem, some transmissions might make mechanical noises, such as humming or squeaking.
  • – The PCM can be set to failsafe mode

How to Fix the P0746 Fault Code

The following repairs may be able to resolve the P0746 fault code:

  • Ensure that all codes are cleared before you drive the car to test if they return.
  • – Clean the hydraulic passages, flush the transmission and fill the transmission with fluid
  • – Replacing transmission filter
  • – Repair damaged wires and connectors to solenoid
  • – Cleaning corrosion on connectors
  • – Replacing the defective solenoid for “C” shift
  • – Replacing a defective hydraulic control unit
  • – Removing or replacing blockages in the pump
  • – Reprogramming of the TCM or PCM

How serious is the P0746 Fault code?

This code can cause gear changes to be difficult or hindered. It should be addressed immediately. It is possible to have your vehicle’s gear changes work normally at first, but it becomes difficult or impossible later. The transmission may heat up, cause fuel consumption to increase, or be damaged beyond repair.
