What is the P0792 fault number? What is the Intermediate Shaft Speed Sensor A Circuit Range/Performance loss description? How do I fix the P0792 fault code What are the symptoms and causes for the P0792 fault code

What is the P0792 Fault code? What does it all mean?

A P0792 code indicates that the powertrain controller module (PCM), has detected an error in the input signal from the intermediate shaft speeds sensor “A” circuit. This code is usually accompanied by input speed sensor codes.

For vehicles equipped with an automatic transmission, the PCM will use information from the transmission’s intermediate shaft speed sensor to make the appropriate gear changes. The gear position and rotation speed should be directly proportional. The intermediate shaft speed sensor tells the PCM how fast it is rotating. This is how the PCM determines the hydraulic pressure, shift points, then shifts the vehicle into its appropriate gear.

If the voltage signal from the “A” circuit of the intermediate shaft speed sensor is not within the expected range, a P0792 code will be generated. To identify the circuit “A”, consult specific repair manuals.

The speed of the intermediate shaft can be monitored as there is a lever for vehicles with manual transmission. This code applies only to vehicles equipped with automatic transmission. If the code is set while your vehicle is in manual transmission it is likely that the PCM has been incorrectly or faulty programmed.

There are many models of Mazda and Toyota that are susceptible to the P0792 fault code, including Ford, Chrysler, Ford (VW), Dodge, Jeep, Mercedes-Benz, Lexus, Lexus, and Chevrolet.

What is the P0792 Fault Code?

Here are some reasons why P0792 should be set.

  • – Defective intermediate shaft speed sensor
  • – Defective transmission input speed sensor
  • – Defective transmission output speeds sensor
  • – Damaged, corroded, or loose connectors
  • – Electric components that cause open circuit or short circuit
  • – Transmission oil that is dirty or contaminated
  • – Low transmission oil
  • – Defective shift solenoids
  • – Defective engine speed sensors
  • – Defective engine temperature sensor
  • Defective hydraulic controller unit (also known under the name valve body or transmission machine)
  • – Rarely, defective TCM or PCM

What are the symptoms for P0792 Malfunction Codes?

These symptoms may be present in vehicles with code P0792.

  • – Illumination at the check engine lights
  • – Difficulty shifting gears
  • – Delayed gear changes
  • – Transmission stuck in any gear
  • – Increased fuel use
  • Speedometer issues
  • Engine stalling
  • Engine misfire
  • – Engine hesitation during acceleration
  • – Unusual engine speed
  • – Lighting other fault lights on instrument panel

How to Fix the P0792 Fault Code

There are several repairs that can resolve the P0792 fault code.

  • – Replacing defective intermediate shaft speed sensor
  • – Replacing a defective transmission input shaft speed sensor
  • – Replacing the defective transmission output shaft speed sensor
  • Repair of short circuit-producing electrical components
  • – Replacing damaged cables or connectors
  • – Replacing damaged shift solenoids
  • – Replacing dirty transmission oils and filters
  • – Topping up transmission oil that is not available
  • – Replacing the faulty engine speed sensors
  • – Replace the defective engine temperature sensor
  • – Replacing an inoperable hydraulic control unit
  • – Sometimes, it is possible to replace or reprogramme a TCM or PCM that is defective.

How serious is the P0792 Fault code?

You should immediately fix the problem if your vehicle displays a P0792 code. This code is a sign of a serious transmission problem. This code can be delayed and cause more damage to the transmission.
