What is the fault code P0812? What is the Reverse Input Circuit Malfunction description. How can you fix the P0812 error code? What are the causes and symptoms of the P0812 error code?
What is the P0812 fault code? What does it signify?
If the powertrain controller module (PCM), or transmission control modules (TCM), detects an issue with the reverse input, P0812 is activated.
Depending upon the make and type of vehicle, the reverse sensor (or switch) can be either an independent component or integrated with the neutral safety switches. Many manual transmission vehicles use an independent reverse sensor. Automatic transmission vehicles typically include a neutral safety switch.
The PCM/TCM calculates data from both the vehicle speed sensor (or wheel speed sensors) to determine the vehicle’s direction of travel. The PCM performs periodic self tests to verify that the system circuit voltage is within specified parameters. If the PCM detects the vehicle in reverse and does not receive a signal from its reverse sensor, code P0812 will be set.
There are many models of Toyota, Honda Fiat, Ford Acura, Lexus Lexus, Geo General Motors Peugeot, Citroen, and Fiat that are susceptible to the P0812 fault code.
What is the P0812 Fault Code and Why Does It Happen?
Below are some reasons to set fault code P0812:
- – Defective reverse sensor or neutral safety switching
- – Reversing sensor damaged wires, rusty connectors
- – Electric connections that create an open or shortcircuit
- – Blown fuse
- – Incorrectly or deficiently programmed PCM (rarely).
What are the symptoms of P0812 Malfunction Code?
These symptoms may be present if you own a vehicle that has the code “P0812”.
- – The engine fault light turns on in some vehicles. This happens after at least two or three faults have been detected.
- – Inoperative or continuously lit reverse lights
How do I fix the P0812 fault code?
There are several repairs that can resolve the P0812 fault code.
- – Replacing the faulty neutral safety switch or reversing sensor
- – Repair and replacement worn or damaged connectors and cables
- – Resolve electrical problems such as short or open circuits
- – Removing and checking blown fuse.
How serious is the P0812 Fault code?
The code P0812 will not affect your vehicle’s drivability, but it can cause problems with the reversing lights. This can pose a danger to pedestrians and other drivers as they will not be able to see the driver’s position when he or she engages the reverse gear. This code should be removed as soon as possible.
